ANFO "latino america resiste" Cd (Nosostros mismos)
Nice abrasive Peruvian punk/Hc bordering on crust. I believe this is a discography, there’s 20 tracks including a LOS CRUDOS cover. It is weird to see a (political) crustcore band that don’t provide a lyric sheet ! And my copy was defective unfortunately. :( anfoband@yahoo.com (Y.B.)

OI STRIKE SAMPLER Cd compilation (Oi strike)
5 Ep’s + 8 bonus tracks by current Italian Oï bands. Although none of them bring anything new, I was surprised at how good most of the bands were ; VANILLA MUFFINS (melodic Oï from Switzerland, with a silly song about football), DUAP, TEMPLARS (their track’s really bad), DEVILSKINS, BILLY BOY & LA SUA BANDA, RAZZAPARTE (I was disappointed by them, I only knew one track that was good, the others sound too basic), BANDA DEL RIONE, CERVELLI STANKI, RABBIA, ALLERGIA. This Cd is a good way for OI STRIKE to make money ; 5 already released Ep’s + a couple bonus tracks, no booklet and no lyric sheet, sold at the price of a regular Cd... http://www.soarecords.it (Y.B.)

NEW WAVE/ CELIA mailorder
This is probably the oldest-running French independent label/distro. They put out less records these days (the latest being the COJOBA Ep), but they put out books, fanzines, and still distribute quite a few underground releases. Anything from new wave/cold wave to death/grind. http://www.celiableue.com (Y.B.)

THE HARDER, THE BETTER vol. 7 Cd-r compilation (Turkey vulture)
Subtitled "worldwide extreme music compilation". Oh boy, does this suck ! First, Americans have always had a weird notion of "the world" ; out of those 24 bands, only 3 aren’t from the Us !! As far as "extreme" goes, well, why not, although some of these bands sound totally mainstream to me. I got friends who were offered to be featured on these comps, and they had to pay something expensive, like 100 dollars. Well, these are only homeburnt Cd-r’s, they don’t even come with a lyric sheet and they’re sold for 12 dollars ppd !!! Geez ! Ok, this aside, I was expecting some fairly good music, since it is put together by people behind the NyHc band NEW SOCIETY OF ANARCHISTS. No such thing ! 90% of these bands play bad metal ! The only average bands were NO CLASS CITIZEN (grind), ALERT ALERT (punk), JAN FEATURING UDSSR (cool ska-punk) and SELF DESTRUKT (punk). Stay away ! http://www.turkeyvulturerecords.com (Y.B.)

JUGGLING JUGULARS "nothing’s finished" Cd (Twisted chords)
Damn, these Finnish guys have been around for ages ! And they still play the brand of melodic punk-Hardcore they’re known for, although they now have a female vocalist. This new album’s pretty good, but I dislike the big, modern production. And I am also sure these old timers could write more original songs, if they spent enough time on them. Some of the lyrics are really clever, while others are just a bunch of slogans put together. To sum it up, this is a good album but I am left with mixed feelings. http://www.twisted-chords.de (Y.B.)
-
INNER CONFLICT "anschlusstreffer" Cd (Twisted chords)
Nice follow up to their discography Cd. This new album sounds more melodic than before, but there are more female vocals too ; I really like it a lot ! It’s melodic punk-Hc with a drum machine and dual vocals, the sound is great, the artwork is weird, as for the lyrics, they deal with personal and social topics in both English and German. http://www.twisted-chords.de (Y.B.)
-
ALTERCADO "el ruido y la rabia" Cd (Fight for your mind)
"Noise and rage", that’s exactly what it is ; fast to-the-point, almost "old school" sounding Hardcore from Chile, with political lyrics that are half-sloganistic and half-poetical. I saw them live and loved them, I heard their first cd and thought it was very interesting ; well, this is a nice follow-up, the music rips and the sound is good, but I still believe it lacks a little spark to make the band perfect. The production could be better, and maybe they could include a couple melodic lines here and there ? Fans of LOS CRUDOS or fast-Hc from the 80’s should like this. reaccion56@latinmail.com (Y.B.)
-
ASIDE FROM A DAY "maieutics" Cd (Art scenic)
French powerful modern metal, that is to say metal mixed with emo, Hc, noisy riffs. Good production, nice packaging (surprising for a metal band), and metaphorical lyrics that I could not understand. If it’s your style... http://www.asidefromaday.com (Y.B.)
-
CORTEGE "punk inside" Cd (Bords de Seine)
First time I heard this band from Paris. They play punk-rock with rock and Oï elements. A couple songs are truly good, but most others don’t do it for me. Don’t ask me why. Maybe it’s the vocals, or the music that ain’t too original, or the overall dark/ streetwise feeling oozing from the band, or their dark, negative, poetical lyrics (a la PARIS VIOLENCE a bit). bdsrds@aol.com (Y.B.)
-
INFECT "indelevel" Cd (78 life)
This short-lived all female old school Hardcore band from Brazil put out an Ep on COMMITMENT, a great split Cd with DISCARGA, and this full length album which is pretty good, although not too original. Of course, the female vocals are a plus because there aren’t a lot of old school Hc bands with female members. The music is also fast enough to keep me interested, and the lyrics, which aren’t translated (grrr) deal with political issues. http://www.infect.rg3.net (Y.B.)
-
ARTURO "conversazioni" Cd (Mastello)
Christ, I can’t believe these guys are still around ! I got an old Cd of them on PANX rds from France, and it seems that they put out quite a few records since 1993 ! Musically, they have evolved from the typical (but good) Italian sound (read : melodic Hc/punk) to more experimental sounds. They still have their feet rooted in punk/Hc (FRAMMENTI, INDIGESTI, BELLI COSI...), but have added more jazzy rhythms and strong bass lines that make me think of NO MEANS NO, VICTIMS FAMILY or even LUCRATE MILK. Not bad. I can’t believe they feature ex-members of CRIPPLE BASTARDS !! Disappointing abstract lyrics. http://www.arturo-hc.it (Y.B.)
-
NUEVO CATECISMO CATOLICO "to hell and back" mCd (Punch)
I heard a track by this band for the first time recently, on a compilation, and thought they were good. I was slightly disappointed because the songs on this record have a strong ’77 punk/ rock’n’roll feel to them (I was expecting something faster and more powerful). However, this is a good record for what it is ; Spanish punk-rock influenced by the DAMNED and many other English bands from the late 70’s. It was recorded a long time ago (1999), I have no idea if the band ever put out anything else. No lyric sheet. :( punch@ctv.es (Y.B.)
-
MUM IS TRUNK "prime time" mCd (M.I.T.)
This new french band play punk-Hc with heavy punk-rock and melodic Hc influences. They’re not bad at all, but I honestly can’t see why they have become so popular. No lyric sheet provided. Give it a try. http://nephtys1.free.fr (Y.B.)

THANX FOR NOTHING #1 fanzine (in French)
Pour un premier jet, ça frappe assez fort ; 40 pages A4 bourrées de chroniques, de colonnes, de délires et d’interviews. Celles-ci sont plutôt bien conduites (TROUBLE EVERY DAY, POINTING FINGER, M-16, HOLD TRUE, LAST QUIET TIME, CHAMPION, THE PROMISE, 21 ENEMY) et les groupes pas trop cons.

WE ARE A FUCKIN’ SHIT Cd (Rotthenness)
Yes you are. This supposedly came out as a tape in 1989. It’s RATOS DE PORAO and SEPULTURA members jamming together in some favellas down there in Brazil, in the late 80’s. There are so many good bands out there that are looking for a record label, I can’t understand why anyone would re-release this. A couple songs are good, but on the whole it’s an hour of noise with a poor sound quality. Next... nyab@originet.com.br

DIN-ADDICT/ ENDLESS STRUGGLE split Cd-r (In mince we grind)
Ok, I have another split Cd with DIN ADDICT (from Hungary) and I thought they were ok. Same thing here : powerful grind/Hc with a few metal or even rock riffs, but I don’t know, I’m no big fan. Besides, they didn’t include a lyric sheet, and with title tracks like "cunt cunt cunt", "dick hunters" or "there are still too many gay", I would have loved to know what they sing about. ENDLESS STRUGGLE hail from Singapore, and play good grind/thrash. They write sloganistic political lyrics and sound like a much more interesting band to me. in_mince_we_grind@hotmail.com (Y.B.)
-
BEYOND DESCRIPTION "acts of sheer madness" Cassette (Black seeds)
This is the tape reissue of one of the best punk Lp’s I’ve ever heard ! BEYOND DESCRIPTION, from Japan, play fast, tight, raging punk. The songs are short and they’re delivered at full speed, while still keeping a punk drumbeat and sound. Don’t miss this ! blacxseeds@hotmail.com (Y.B.)
-
BAFABEGIYA/ ARABELLA split Ep (Spacement rds)
2 new US bands. ARABELLA : discordant, offbeat, noisy emo. Too arty. Too intellectual. Not my style. BAFABEGUYA get much closer to my tastes with their brand of original, melodic punky-Hc. I know their name’s weird, but they’re pretty good ! Almost emo at times, or maybe BLACK FLAG influenced. http://www.spacementreno.com (Y.B.)
-
AGROTOXICO "estado de guerra civil" Cd (Dirty faces)
Ok, I thought they were excellent live, but this Cd is even better !! I totally love this band. It’s the first time I get to hear one of their records but I’m sure they’ve been around for a long time. The lyrics are punk and a bit hateful and negative, kinda like NECRACEDIA’s. The music is tight, perfect punk-Hc pretty similar to POISON IDEA, or MASS MURDERERS. It’s angry, anthemic, political, yummy, buy it now ! http://www.dirtyfaces.de (Y.B.)
-
POINT BREAK "class struggle" mCd (Point break)
Please check out the review I wrote last year for their demo Cd-r, because this is the same songs on a real (ie not homeburnt) Cd, and they added a video track as bonus. Great melodic positive Hc from Italy with political (socialist) lyrics. Great band ! bepper@tiscalinet.it (Y.B.)
-
FALLEN INTO ASHES/ AMBROSIA split Cd (Dead butcher records)
Two Czech "modern Hc" bands mixing metal, metal, metal, emo, and maybe Hc too. Kinda like MORNING AGAIN mixed with emo, if you will. I’m sure they listen to a lot of American bands on EULOGY, EQUAL VISION, PER KORO and REFLECTION records. Introspective lyrics. Nice label name though (ha, ha). http://www.deadbutcher.sk (Y.B.)
-
-
DOBERMANN/ CORE Y GANG split Cd (Punkahontas)
It’s the first time I get to hear DOBERMANN, since their first Ep came out on a label I refuse to support in any way (and they even "forgot" to thank him in their thanx list). Their 5 tracks are great ! They come from Rouen, France, and play tight & uptempo punk-rock with good lyrics. GONOKOX, LES IMBIBES or PARABELLUM come to mind. CORE Y GANG come from Brittany, and they sound like MELMOR a lot (celtic punk with a violon and good lyrics too). I like them a lot, although the production is fairly poor on their side. Great Cd. http://monsite.wanadoo.fr/punkahontas (Y.B.)
-
ZEROX #9 fanzine
Still around after all these years, and bigger than ever. ZEROX = Singapore Hc zine with a whole lot of columns, interviews (long discussion with WOJCZECH (German grindcore), STEVE TOWSON (folk artist), ASPIDISTRA FLY (experimental band from Japan), DJ REIKI (Singapore), THORACIC DISRUPTOR (digital grind, Usa)), a long Indonesian Hc-punk report, and a whole bunch of punk, Hardcore & noise reviews. As you can see, the editor’s really openminded, and I like the way he writes. Recommended. trashkore@yahoo.com (Y.B.)
-
UNABOMBER "absolute evil" Cassette (La polla records.records)
I had already heard their split Ep with E-150 and didn’t like it much. I believe this Spanish band features (featured ?) members of the almighty 24 IDEAS. UNABOMBER’s music is well played but not too original (hateful Hardcore with fast parts and heavy breakdowns), but more than anything, I can’t stand the vocals (either screamt or gruff). However, the lyrics are some of the best I have read in a long long time ; totally brilliant !! About patriotism, tough guys, the Hc scene, etc. Decent stuff overall, and funny label-name. unabomber@eresmas.com (Y.B.)
-
NEVER SAY DIE #9 newsletter
Cool free Hc newsletter from Singapore. Contains a long interview with SCOTT BAIO ARMY (Us thrashcore) and news, of course. Maybe you can get it via email ? xneversaydie_88x@hotmail.com (Y.B.)
-
RASH "gorelandia" Cassette (Reacciona)
Pretty cool Mexican Hc-punk-crust. They remind me a bit of early ASIDE (from France). They aren’t too original, but still play pleasant noise, with politically charged lyrics. Pro-quality cassette. rash_punx@hotmail.com (Y.B.)
-
A HC-PUNK COMMUNITY AMONG AN IMPERIALISTIC EMPIRE OF MULTINATIONAL COMPANIES #5 fanzine
I’m not even sure this is the name of the zine. I got this thru the mail for free, it’s written in english and was published in 2002. There’s interviews with ACTIVE MINDS, ABUSE YOUTH and POUNDAFLESH (all Uk Hc-punk), as well as articles about Us economics, ecotourism, ecology... The layout could be better, otherwise it’s a good zine, I hope it’s still around ? [Dimitris Dimas, Po Box 3700, 10210 Athens, Greece] (Y.B.)

OUT OF DATE "the kids are back" demo Cd-r
New band from Bordeaux, France, and a nice surprise at that ! Typical, uptempo, anthemic old school Hc. They do a cover of 7 SECONDS’ "here’s your warning", to give you an idea. Also reminiscent of early GORILLA BISCUITS, early NATIONS ON FIRE, MISCONDUCT, INTENSITY... Well, you get the picture. It’s just a fucking shame there’s no lyric sheet provided, with title tracks like "I respect", "pissed off", " I’m a star", I would have loved to know what they sing about. :( http://www.outofdate.fr.st (Y.B.)
-
I SHOT CYRUS "complete discography 1997-2001" Cd (Refuse)
These guys rule the universe. Not only are they awesome people, but they also play awesome music, and put out their Cd on an awesome label. What more can I say ? After hearing HHH or INFEST, I thought no one would ever be able to play Hardcore any faster. I was wrong. I SHOT CYRUS is the fastest Hc band that ever existed. No thrash, no metal, no grind, no crust ; just Hardcore. It’s incredible. 21 tracks in something like 23 minutes, and strong hateful political lyrics. Third world Hardcore to the max !! http://www.refuserecords.prv.pl (Y.B.)
-
NELSON MONTFORT ORCHESTRA Cd-r demo
I got this Cd in the mail without any lyric sheet, cover or further explanation, which kinda sucks. It sucks all the more as the music’s good ! NELSON MONFORT ORCHESTRA is a new French band featuring ex-Members of WEDA. They play good varied power violence/ grindcore, the sound quality is good, the only thing that annoys me sometimes is the screaming vox. Other than that, may I have a lyric sheet, please ? wedacoreben@libertysurf.fr (Y.B.)
-
MELARAT/ OPPROBRIUM ADORNMENT split Cassette (Cactus)
One more cool CACTUS release. I enjoyed MELARAT, they have grindcore guitars and guttural vocals, but the drumbeat is only punk-Hardcore/ mid-tempo. They remind me a bit of Holland’s NJETROCK, but since no one has ever heard of NJETROCK, let’s just say they are an original grindcore band. OPPROBRIUM ADORNMENT are a more typical grind band, with a lesser good sound quality. They are now called SELF MADE GOD, and I think I reviewed a Cd-r by this band a few months ago. Besides all that ok music, the good thing about this cassette is that both bands come from Malaysia and are very political. And since Malaysia is one of the most conservative countries in the world, it’s totally great to see socially aware bands like those over there. So show them support and buy this tape instead of spending your money on silly American bands ! cactusdistro@yahoo.com (Y.B.)
-
EVIL ARMY "conquer human life" Ep (Contaminated)
When I saw the cover I thought this was a 60’s garage band, but the music rips ! EVIL ARMY are a US band from Memphis, they play tight and energetic punk-Hc with an 80’s touch and negative lyrics. Somehow reminiscent of the MISFITS. This is a good Ep, I’d be curious to hear more. http://www.evilarmy.org (Y.B.)
-
LEFT FOR DEAD "fuck your authority" Ep (Self released ?)
Pretty decent Uk punk with nice political lyrics, a good sound quality and a strong English accent. Nothing else to say, this is an Ok Ep but it does not explore any new ground either. Nice splatter vinyl though. leftfordeadles@aol.com (Y.B.)
-
C.S.M.D./ DRUNKEN ORGY OF DESTRUCTION split Ep (No fucking labels)
Two shitty grind/noise bands from Holland and the Usa. DOOD play decent lo-fi grindcore/ power-violence. CSMD’s sound quality sucks, they use effects on the vocals, play short songs, and provide an info-sheet but there are no lyrics printed anywhere (cowards !). Lo-fi grind can be funny, but not this time. ...And how about pictures of naked men next time ? http://www.globaldarkness.com/csmd (Y.B.)
-
THE DICK SPIKIE/ BAD NASTY split Ep (Dynamite rds)
Japanese bands usually kick ass (musically), so I was disappointed by DICK SPIKIE’s raw punk and bad sound quality. On the flipside, Frenchies BAD NASTY offer two tracks of good spikie punk (the second, melodic song is great). http://www.dynamite.fr.st (Y.B.)
-
EBOLA VIRUS "no redemption" Ep (Art of the underground)
I don’t review a lot of rap, because I don’t get to hear any and also because most rap bands are crap. EBOLA VIRUS is a one man band from New York playing good, slightly melodic rap with highly political lyrics. Not really Hardcore, but not really pop either. The lyrics are very long and totally clever and brilliant ! Nice stuff ! http://www.ebolavirus.org (Y.B.)
-
ARMED WITH INTELLIGENCE/ THE YOUNG ONES split Ep (Art of the underground)
Two typical fast-paced US punk-Hc bands with dual vocals and clever political lyrics. Makes me think of a faster CRIMPSHRINE, I SPY or DIVIDE & CONQUER. Too bad the production is only average, because the lyrics are really awesome, and the music is good. Grey vinyl. http://www.artoftheunderground.com (Y.B.)
-
-
DAY OF THE DEAD/ THE DAMAGE DONE split Ep (Goodwill)
Nice Portuguese old school Hc with a punky sound and socially aware lyrics. I don’t like the gnarled vocals much. Side B : kinda similar Hc from the US with an old school approach and a rockin’ beat. Makes me think of a less good GOOD CLEAN FUN. Pretty decent Ep ! http://www.psycholidayproject.it/go... (Y.B.)
-
DAY OF THE DEAD Ep (Goodwill)
I believe this is their 1st Ep. It’s nice old school Hardcore from Portugal with a good sound quality. Not too original but well done, and the lyrics are really interesting. http://www.psycholidayproject.it/go... (Y.B.)
-
7 SECONDS "quilty of a crime of thinking" Cd-r
I already said (see MISFITS review) how much these bootlegs suck. However, this one is the best of the series. It’s still a (professional) Cd-r, there’s still no booklet included, it’s only about 30 minute long, but for once, the sound quality is decent. There’s 11 tracks, some from their early days and some from their poppy days. Recorded back in 1986. Oh well... [no address, coward] (Y.B.)
-
INSTITUTE "two shadows" Cd (Yellow dog)
I believe this is their first cd (see review of their second album below). I now understand they are a US band. Their second Cd had a couple nice moments, but this one is all about slow, heavy, ambient noise stuff. I think they listened to too much NEUROSIS. Not for me. http://www.yellowdog.de (Y.B.)
-
UNLOGISTIC/ SEANEWS split Ep (Angrr)
2 bands from Paris on this super thick slab of plastic ; SEANEWS : French typical noisy-rock-emo, blah ! UNLOGISTIC : I was a bit disappointed as they were much better live, on this split they deliver two songs ; a slow one and a fast & chaotic one. macario@freesurf.fr (Y.B.)
-
SIMFELA Ep (Alchimia)
Interesting new French band coming out of nowhere. 1st ep, red vinyl and a good bunch of old school Hc tracks. The music’s quite ok, I just don’t like the screaming vocals. What’s wrong with bands these days ? Why do they all scream like that ? It’s just ridiculous. No lyric sheet unfortunately. simfela666@voila.fr (Y.B.)
-
ENGAGE "when will this end ?" Ep (Skipworth)
I bought this thinking it was an Ep by that old Californian band, oops ! ENGAGE are from the Uk and play tight old school Hc with melodies reminiscent of DAG NASTY, IMBALANCE or SHELTER, and mostly personal lyrics. This is great and totally the kind of music I like, but I still prefer the US (Ca) ENGAGE. http://www.skipworthrecords.co.uk (Y.B.)
-
IGNORANCE Ep (Dewa rds)
Everything’s written in Japanese unfortunately. I can only tell you it’s powerful crust/punk from Japan with dual vocals. The music’s ok but not really original. The sound quality is ok too. Decent stuff. dewarecords@mx51.et.tiki.ne.jp (Y.B.)
-
LITTLE BASTARDS "greed slaves" Ep (Dewa rds)
Hey it’s on the same label but I like this better than the IGNORANCE Ep (see above). It’s powerful grindcore deride of metal influence, with growling vocals and a fairly powerful production. As usual with Japanese bands, their English is so bad that it makes their lyrics hilarious. Anyways, good grind. Commercial distros would sell it this way : "sales point : early NAPALM DEATH". dewarecords@mx51.et.tiki.ne.jp (Y.B.)
-
HEARTWORK Ep (yellow cover) (Dawa rds)
Typical Japanese punk ! Nothing special. Very decent stuff, but nowhere as good as BASTARD, DON DON, WARHEAD,... Terrible cover art. Lyrics in Japanese. dewarecords@mx51.et.tiki.ne.jp (Y.B.)
-
HEARTWORK Ep (blue cover) (Dawa rds)
Same as above, but with a better production ! dewarecords@mx51.et.tiki.ne.jp (Y.B.)
