GANTZ cd-r demo (Impure muzik)
This new French band will certainly appeal to all those out there who love the French emo sound ! GANTZ play quite intense emo with screaming vocals and noisy, depressing parts. The sound is great, the homemade layout is nice, the music is actually pretty good,… if you can get past those terrible whining vocals and personal, intellectual lyrics. Blah ! http://www.impuremuzik.com (Y.B.)
-
ANESTESIA "satisfied" promo Cd-r (Cepahlic rds)
This is a Czech metal-hardcore band adding crustcore, NyHc, and even Nu-metal elements to their music. The Nu-metal parts totally bore me, but thankfully most of the songs are fast and powerful. All in all this sounds like a decent band. The Cd-r came with band-info, but no lyric sheet. tom.cepahlic@seznam.cz (Y.B.)

PARIS VIOLENCE "en attendant l’apocalyspe" Cd (Dialektik)
Is that their second album ? I think so. PARIS VIOLENCE is a one-man band from Paris playing dark and kinda original punk-rock influenced by Oï music and probably cold-wave too. It’s just guitar + vocals + a drum machine and some synthesizers here and there. The lyrics deal with life on the streets of Paris. At times, PARIS VIOLENCE remind me of french pop singers like RENAUD, STEPHANE EICHER or PIGALLE. It’s not that bad, but they’re trying too much to create a dark and negative atmosphere, and write poetical and intellectual lyrics. It still lacks something to make it memorable. chantal.DIALEKTIK@wanadoo.fr (Y.B.)

25 TA LIFE "best of friends, enemies" Cd (Age of venus)
They’re back, and I guess they’re still the best band coming out of the New York Hc scene. Groovy mosh parts and old school bursts devoid of metal, kinda gutural vocals… let’s face it, the lyrics are pretty bad, very cliché and uninspired. The whole album sounds as if it was recorded in a haste to promote a tour or make a quick buck. It’s only 20 minute long and there’s two cover songs by MINOR THREAT and AGNOSTIC FRONT (how’s that for originality ?). There’s no booklet, only a blurred photo plus the lyrics. The cover artwork’s quite ugly too. Tape it from a friend… http://www.theageofvenusrecords.com (Y.B.)

BREIZH DISORDER festival #3, Pont Rean, 14/02/2004 (show review)
Third edition for this festival that goes by the same name as a Cd compilation featuring around 30 local (breton) punk, Hc, metal, garage, rock bands. Around 500 freaks gathered in this cool place, and soon went drunk. All kinds of underground music were represented : SPEEDBALL (good tight melodic Hc), LIK HA LIK (rock/ fusion/ metal - not my cup of tea), TE WAIRA (metal, NyHc/ Nu-metal - not my cup of tea), GOTHAM (decent to average psychobilly), AL BUNDY (pretty decent metallic grind), DOCTEUR POPOL (local rock/punk-rock for students), LES GLOCHOS (great & goofy popular songs about food, people from the capital, politicians...), TV MEN (pretty good garage/ punk/ melodic Hc), DEAD AND THE STUFF (pretty good punk-rock), and last but not least THE MAD TRASHERS (excellent long-running grindcore band - great performance) and PAPY BOARDING (very good old school Hc, unfortunately that kind of music doesn’t fit well in a big place). All in all I spent an ok night and things would have been even better without that dickhead wearing a SCREWDRIVER shirt, and with a cheaper entrance price too. (Y.B.)

NO TIME TO LOSE + EMPOIGNE 07/02/2004, Rennes, @ l’Ekluserie (show review)
The first band was a hippie band mixing french popular songs with a-capella rap, they were ok, but drew quite a few long-haired. NO TIME TO LOSE were great, as always, and even though the sound quality sucked (it was in a squat and there was no sound system), the atmosphere was cool. Decent show. (Y.B.)

THE DIVISIVE "where have all the flowers gone ?" mCd (Self released)
This is THE DIVISIVE’s second release. This Finnish band sounds a lot like another Finnish band called JUGGLING JUGULARS ; you know, uptempo tight and melodic Hc/punk. I like that kind of stuff. They aren’t as tight as JUGGLING JUGULARS, but I enjoyed them nonetheless. http://www.thedivisive.com/ (Y.B.)
-
FIST OF FURY vs THE DIVISIVE vs THL vs GO APE Cd compilation (FC records)
This compilation features 4 international melodic Hc/punk bands. Two of them are little more punk (THE DIVISIVE (Finland) and THL (Belgium)) while the last two are slightly more melodic Hc oriented (think : FAT WRECK) : GO APE (Holland) and FIST OF FURY (Belgium)). All in all a decent comp, but where is the fucking lyric sheet ?!? fullcontactresistance@hotmail.com (Y.B.)
-
THE WORLD IS WHAT WE MAKE OF IT Cd compilation (Longtime)
Pretty decent comp featuring five Hc/punk bands from Finland. OVERDRIVEN and THE DIVISE play good melodic Hc/punk, COLD SUMMER play more typical melodic Hc, HERO DISHONEST play good fast Hc-punk, I’m left wondering what DAMN SEAGULLS do on this comp ; they’re ok, they’re really ok, but their brand of garage-punk really clashes with the other bands’ styles. Good sound quality overall. http://www.thedivisive.com/ (Y.B.)

ENGLISH DOGS "all the world’s a rage" Cassette (Alternati)
Believe it or not, never before had I heard a song by this long-running english punk band ! I think they’ve been around since 1978 or something… Wow. And they’re not that bad ! They’re one of those big bands who play a mix of punk, Hardcore, metal, rock ; some tracks remind me of modern day GBH, later PRONG, METALLICA (that’s probably due to a couple terrible guitar solos), and many melodic Hc band on EPITAPH. They’re good musicians, that’s what makes this an ok listen. (Y.B.) http://www.alternati-cd.com.pl (Y.B.)
-
ACTIONS FALL SHORT "the nightmare goes on" Cd-r (Heart on fire)
I believe this is their second demo. A.F.S. play tight old school Hardcore with a slight Rock’n’roll touch. The lyrics are pretty good and deal with social issues. It’s nice to see a band like that in France. The sound is good, maybe a little muffled, but this is only a demo so… xmy_dreamsx@hotmail.com (Y.B.)
-
COMBAT SHOCK "forgotten but not gone" Cd-r (Beat bedsit)
I think I had never heard this band before, even though they started in 1994, toured in my area, and put out several records ! They’re great. COMBAT SHOCK are a 100% punk band playing uptempo, tight and powerful punk along the lines of all those Uk ’82 bands. The sound is good on the 36 tracks ! There are two big problems with this Cd : 1) why not release a real cd instead of a Cd-r ? and 2) (more important) : where is the goddamn lyric sheet !!! be@bedsit.fsnet.co.uk (Y.B.)
-
OVERNOISE "lethal ways to hell’s kitchen doors" Cd (Throne)
I thought this was a swedish band because the commercial sticker on the cd stated "sounds like swedish bands like NASÜM". But it’s a new spanish band. The music is decent, it’s fast grindcore with a few modern Hc/metal influences. The sound is ok but I don’t like the production, which is noisy and chaotic. More than anything, the vocals spoil everything ; there are a lot of effects on them and they get really unbearable. Quite negative, mostly social lyrics. http://www.thronerecords.com (Y.B.)
-
CONFLICT "now you’ve put your foot in it" mCd (Mortarhate)
How silly. These guys always rant about how EMI sucks, but they’re as commercial as any major. These two tracks are both included on their latest Cd/Lp. What’s the use ? There’s not even a bonus track. For die-hard fans only. http://www.conflict.org.uk (Y.B.)
-
CONFLICT "Carlo Giuliani" mCd (Mortarhate)
Same thing. The title track also appears on the album, and the other one, it’s on the "stop the war" compilation. The only thing worth of interest here is the video-track. Why did they bother pressing a Cd for just one video track ? :( http://www.conflict.org.uk (Y.B.)

4 WAYS ONE THOUGHT Cd compilation (Lucifers legions)
This is a quite interesting comp featuring 4 international old school NyHc bands. It’s a bit sad two are from Germany, but one is from Indonesia and the other from Italy. The sound quality is excellent on all recordings. Despite they all play old style NyHc, each band has its own approach : NEVER FACE DEFEAT are more metal, NO MORE FEAR play melodic old school, MORE THAN EVER are influenced by new school (emo + metal), and WHITE MINORITY play fastcore. I actually bought the Cd to check out this latest band, but was a bit disappointed. They have two excellent, ripping thrashcore tracks, and the two others are a bit slower (but still good). All four bands’ english is pretty bad, I wish they would sing in their native languages. Most lyrics are personal and senseless. NO MORE FEAR are a bit more into social matters. Decent comp ! http://www.luciferslegions.com (Y.B.)
-
LAWSTREET 16 "demo July 2002" Cd-r
Ex-OUT FOR BLOOD people (Belgian Nyhc) go for the old school Hc sound. Why not. I think LAWSTREET 16 try to sound like NEGATIVE APPROACH a lot. Same music (old school Hc/ NyHc with an Oï touch) and lyrics dealing with personal relationships. Ok sound, + a WARZONE cover. Nothing special. http://www.rpp-hc.com/ (Y.B.)
-
THINKING STRAIGHT "postitive crew" mCd (Die hard)
Christ ! On the same day DIE HARD sent me two Cds of bands I had never heard before, and both of them rip hard !! THINKING STRAIGHT, from Indonesia, play super-fast Straight edge Hardcore with excellent guitar solos and melodic lines. Kinda like LOWPUNCH, or early BILLINGSGATE. Shit, this is my favourite music style !! The sound is pretty good, and the lyrics decent, although a bit cliché (dealing with "the scene", etc). Give South-East Asian Hc a chance ! (Y.B.) http://www.diehardxcollective.hu (Y.B.)
-
M.T.A. "the politics of denial" mCd (Beat bedsit)
Funny cover of a cop handing an anti-nazi placard. :) M.T.A., from england, are a good new Hc-punk band along the lines of (early) M.D.C. or IN THE SHIT. Good political lyrics to top it all. Keep an eye out for them. be@bedsit.fsnet.co.uk (Y.B.)
-
COMBAT SHOCK/ ANAL BEARD split mCd (Beat bedsit)
More of COMBAT SHOCK brand of tight uptempo punk with female vocals. Excellent. Their lyrics are a bit goofy on this record. I don’t enjoy ANAL BEARD much (see review of their Cd-r elsewhere on this site), they’re a goofy/silly punk-rock band from the Uk as well (like the TOY DOLLS or WAT TYLER with a synthesizer). be@bedsit.fsnet.co.uk (Y.B.)
-
ATAXIA "pain in progress" Cd-r (demo)
When was this recorded ? 2001 or 2002 probably. I saw ATAXIA live one year ago and they were a nice surprise. They’re a new Hc band from Dijon, France, and play old school NyHc with social lyrics. The sound is good, the music’s not metal at all, they remind me a bit of that other French band called SHIVER EFFECT (see review elsewhere on this site). This is a pretty good demo but I was a bit disappointed compared to their live performance. I got my copy through : maloka.distro@free.fr (Y.B.)
-
HOLD TRUE "nothing can destroy me, nothing can stop me !" mCd (Die hard)
Holy shit, what a great release ! HOLD TRUE are a super fast positive Hc band from Hungary. It seems the hungarian scene is getting bigger these days, and the DIE HARD collective is putting out a lot of great Cd’s. HOLD TRUE play super fast Hc with a few melodic guitar lines or solos that make the songs memorable, screaming (but not emo) vocals, a good sound quality, and decent but kinda typical lyrics about alcohol, the Hc scene, friendships… Don’t miss this ! http://www.holdxtrue.hardcore.hu (Y.B.)
-
SVINOKOP demo
This is a new russian band, and this is probably their first demo. It was recorded in their rehearsal room, and the sound is really really poor. I wish they would have spent money on a professional studio, because this could be good, with a proper recording. The tape is really really short (5 or 10 minutes at best). From what I could decipher, they play short and fast punk-Hc songs, with some political and some goofy lyrics. diyhc@yahoo.com (Y.B.)
-
RED REACTION "welcome to the warzone" Cd (Coalition)
Fairly new US band playing old style Hc (same music, same production). I say old style, not old school, they sound closer to the early Boston sound than the youth crew ’88 one. They’re not too bad, but there’s nothing awesome about them either. The lyrics deal with social & personal issues. http://www.coalition-records.com (Y.B.)
-
CONFLICT "there’s no power without control" Cd (Mortarhate)
Still around after all these years, and still true to themselves (I guess ?). This is typical CONFLICT tunes, without the synthesizer thankfully. The production is ace, the riffs stick to your head, the lyrics are pretty decent apart from a stupid anti-Straitght Edge song, the drum beat is a bit slow. It’s a pretty good album. http://www.conflict.org.uk (Y.B.)

ICONS OF FILTH "the mortarhate projects" Cd (Mortarhate)
I’ve never been a sucker for the english anarcho-punk sound. My favourite bands have always been the punkest ones, bands like LIBERTY, CONFLICT, and maybe ICONS OF FILTH. ICONS OF FILTH sounded like DISCHARGE quite a bit, maybe less powerful but with more intelligent lyrics. They sounded a bit like modern day AUS ROTTEN or CZOLGOSZ. Ok stuff. The good thing is this is a extensive discography featuring 30 tracks (one Lp and 4 eps), all original artwork is reproduced, but… where’s the lyric sheet ?!? What’s the point of writing political speeches if people can’t hear or read them ? http://www.conflict.org.uk (Y.B.)
-
MERZBOW/ NAPALMED split Cd (Merciless)
Oh damn, two total noise bands from Czech and Japan. I had a hard time sorting out who was who. I like noise, but this is too much. 7 MINUTES OF NAUSEA is cool, BASTARD NOISE is cool, 7 MINUTES DE CHIASSE is cool, but these two bands, man, it’s not music, it’s…noise. I could record the same kind of sounds in my kitchen. Urgh. merciless.core@worldonline.cz (Y.B.)

POINTING FINGER Cd-R (Solidaridad distro)
Ok, this nicely put together Cd-r compiles a couple tracks to introduce this portuguese band to the south american "market". It’s ok as it is. Problem is : my copy didn’t come with a lyric sheet, that sucks because Px Fx lyrics are usually pretty intelligent. Second, none of these songs are unreleased (most appear on the split Cd with IN PIECES, which is not their best release). And last, this Cd-r is only 20 minute long ! Why ?? They could have easily added 30 or 40 minutes of music for the same price. solidaridad_distro@hotmail.com (Y.B.)
-
SALT IN THE WOUND (stop the war/ Carpet bombers for peace) mCd-compilation (Jungle rds)
This came out in 2003 as an anti-war in Iraq benefit. Ok, it’s for a good cause, but the record sucks. There are 2 electro-rock-pop bands and one punk. No one will ever enjoy the 3 bands. And the punk song is by CONFLICT, but it’s not even unreleased as it’s taken from their latest album. The cover artwork is great, and there’s a couple stars involved in the Cd : Jello Biafra (D.K.), Penny Rimbaud (Crass), Steve Ignorant (Conflict). Could have been cool… http://www.jungle-records.com (Y.B.)
-
OVERSIZED "happy in between or sad" Cd (Funtime)
This is what I call supermarket music. Really poppy and slightly overproduced Belgian "Hc" or rock. Sounds like NERF HERDER or GREEN DAY. Problem is, these guys arrive 10 years too late. Bleuargh. http://www.funtimerecords.com/ (Y.B.)
-
LA FALCE Cd (Life of hate)
"Emo-violence" ; that’s probably the best word to describe this band, although those two terms seem contradictory as emo kids pretty much stand for modern-day hippies. They even wear beards, and sometimes long hair like their ancestors. :) That’s actually the case for LA FALCE. As for their music, it’s powerful, heavy (but not metal), sometimes fast. I don’t like it because of those ridiculous screaming vocals. Personal lyrics that seem to deal with social issues (?). lafalce@infinito.it (Y.B.)
-
K-LINE "lessons learned and ignored" Cd (Boss tuneage)
I was told there’s one ex-member of THE STUPIDS in this band, but that’s where the comparison ends. Don’t let their DS-13 and F-MINUS shirts fool you. K-LINE play tight and very poppy hardcore. It’s ok stuff, but it’s too melodic for me. No lyric sheet. http://www.bosstuneage.com (Y.B.)

HEY YOU ! #5 fanzine (in french)
:) ) tws.heyyou@free.fr (Y.B.)

NEVROTIC FOR LIFE + LES DRUIDES + LES GUNNERS + ?, Rennes, 27/12/03, @ Mondo bizarro (show review)
I thought that during the Christmas holidays no one would turn up, and was really surprised to see about 200 people at the show !! First band, whose name I didn’t get, was a local metal band playing MISFISTS covers. Ok stuff, but they only played the slow songs ! :( LES GUNNERS, who had gotten back together for one show, played UNDERTONES covers. They were pretty good. LES DRUIDES only played SEX PISTOLS covers. I’m not crazy about THE SEX PISTOLS, but the covers were pretty decent. NEVROTIC FOR LIFE, featuring members of NEVROTIC EXPLOSION and RIGHT FOR LIFE, only play CLASH covers, and they play them really well too. It was a great show, or should I say, a great karaoke to end up 2003, but even though the bands were good, I still believe playing covers of such classics is sacrilege. :) (Y.B.)
-
COÄCCION "desorden" Cd (Cryptas)
Mexico crust-punk reminiscent of FORCA MACABRA, COPROFILIA, early DOOM or early DISRUPT. Hateful vocals, dis-beat, noisy guitars, ok sound quality, and good, short, political lyrics. cons_internacion@hotmail.com (Y.B.)
-
PALANTIME demo Cd-r
This new local band was a nice surprise live (see show review below). The layout for their first demo is neat and the sound quality is pretty good. They play melodic Hardcore with emo-pop overtones. For a first demo this is nice, although a bit too melodic for me. Where’s the lyric sheet ? palantime@club-internet.fr (Y.B.)
-
ISB "fuck you Jesus" Cd-r demo
New French band from Troyes. This was probably recorded in their rehearsal room, so the sound is pretty bad. ISB play basic Hardcore with old school and punk roots, and female vocals too. The lyrics are both personal and socially aware, they even have a nice anti-religious song (hence the title of the Cd). There’s nothing groundbreaking about this Cd-r, but this is a band to look out for, as they might become damn good in a couple years. isb_hxc@hotmail.com (Y.B.)

HEY YOU ! #4 fanzine (in French)

ENDSTAND "never fall into silence" Cd (Day after)
Another nice digipack from DAY AFTER. I enjoyed ENDSTAND’s early records, I saw them live a few years ago and thought they were awesome. Then I saw them again a couple years later, they had all greased their hair, wore back clothes and played rock’n’roll. Weird. This new album reminds me a bit of modern day SICK OF IT ALL. It’s mid-tempo old school Hardcore with influences from emo, rock’n’roll, melodic Hc… I think the vocals are recorded a bit too loud. The lyrics are more personal than before, but still deal with social issues. http://www.dayafter.cz (Y.B.)
-
PALANTIME + BUTTER BEANS + HOMEBOYS, 20/12/2003, Rennes (France), @ Mondo bizarro
One of those frustrating shows where I have to hold a stall and can’t see any of the bands play… :( PALANTIME are a new local band, they play typical melodic Hc in the FAT WRECK style. I believe they arrive a bit too late for that kind of music, but they were still pretty good and made up for a nice "opening act". I guess we’ll hear more about them soon. BUTTER BEANS, man, their demo was good, I thought they would only be "decent" live (because they are a young band), but they kicked my ass. Hard. The singer is awesome, she has so much charisma. They play tight melodic Hc with horns and lots of danceable parts. I almost didn’t get to see any HOMEBOYS song, but from afar they sounded like a decent melodic punk band. I remember one of their early Eps being pretty good too. Decent show, decent turn out. (Y.B.)

Once in a while you open up a package, put a Cd in your player and you’re like "woah !". ALTERCADO were a really good surprise –from Chile. Ok, the production is not as powerful as for bands on VICTORY records, the music is slightly basic, but for a first cd, this is great. These guys are angry and they show it. Fast old school Hc, aggressive political lyrics… I want to hear more from this band ! [Reaccion discos, pje. 11 # 415, Capricornio, Graneros, Chile] (Y.B.)
-
IRONIX "huma frenezo" mCd (Dynamite)
This took quite a long time to come out, and the band split up in between (that’s often the case). IRONIX were one of the only spikey-punk bands in France, they played uptempo pogo-punk with pretty good political lyrics. The sound on this Cd is good, but I don’t like the production much because I think it lacks power. Pretty decent. dynamite@netcourrier.com (Y.B.)
-
COUNTERBLAST "impassivity" Cd (Do not consume)
Nice Malaysian import. Incredibly disgusting cover art, good sound quality, nice but dark and negative lyrics… COUNTERBLAST are ex-members of (the almighty) G-ANX going for the slow, sludgy, heavy crust sound (NEUROSIS anyone ?). The songs are long, slow, and never speed up. I don’t like it much, but if you’re into that style, don’t miss this discography. dnc_collective@yahoo.com (Y.B.)
-
ANNIHILATION TIME Cd (Head on)
This band has BLACK FLAG written all over. At least they don’t try to hide their plagiarism. The cover art was even drawn by the same guy who did all the BLACK FLAG stuff ! I’ve never been a big BLACK FLAG fan – apart from their early recordings. ANNIHILATION TIME play quite powerful heavy Hc with a few noisy or metal influences, their music will appeal to old school fans as much as mosh-core or noisy-Hc (think : BOTCH, etc) fans. Not too bad, except the label sells this 20 minute long Cd as a full length… headxon@hotmail.com (Y.B.)
-
NUTCASE "welcome to humanity" Cd (Maloka)
Ex-HEYOKA people started HUMAN SPARK, and when HUMAN SPARK split up, they started NUTCASE. NUTCASE play tight melodic punk that sounds like THE BRIGADES quite a lot, or BAD RELIGION, or maybe even NO FX at times. Good sound and pretty good socially aware lyrics. This is the kind of band that would fit well on DIALEKTIC records (from France). http://www.nutcase.fr.st (Y.B.)
-
RUIDO DE ODIO/ ARMENIA split Cd (Latin core)
These bands are from Ecuador, which is cool in itself. ARMENIA only play two songs of boring noise. RUIDO DE ODIO play kinda basic thrash-punk-Hc-grind, they remind me of mid-eighties bands like TOXIC TRASH, MAD TRASHERS, RAPT, etc. They’re a bit too chaotic for me. Decent sound quality and really basic political lyrics. latincore@hotmail.com (Y.B.)
