ROBOT HAS WEREWOLF HAND "the endless Lp" mCd (Art of the underground)
How can you go wrong with 15 tracks played in 13 minutes !?! Actually, yeah, you can go wrong when you sell this as a full length Cd. Apart from this, this is a great disc. The angry dual vocalists make me think of ASIDE, KILL THE MAN WHO QUESTIONS, ANTISCHISM, or EVERYDAY MADNESS. Raging uptempo Hc. Tight and to the point. Take no prisoners !! artoftheunderground@hotmail.com (Y.B.)

DISYOUTH ARMY "my suburb sucks" demo Cd-r
Ex-members of NO REFLEXION LEFT and it shows. Same thing, only even better ! Awesome thrashcore from Paris, 9 songs in 8 minutes, great production, cool lyrics... I heard they changed their name to SKITYOUTH ARMY ? disyoutharmy@no-log.org (Y.B.)
-
KOB Vs MAD BUTCHER Cd compilation (Mad butcher)
Quite a few unreleased tracks here, but unfortunately, not many good bands apart from famous ones like LOS FASTIDIOS, STAGE BOTTLES, STEAM PIG, 8°6 CREW or ROTTEN BOIS. Most others play average left-wing Oï or bad ska-punk. How come there’s never powerful left-wing Oï bands, only melodic ones ? [http://www.madbutcher.de] (Y.B.)
-
RATOS DE PORAO "ao vivo no Cbcg" Cd (Peculio)
Well, I’ve never been a huge fan of the band, although they’re ok I guess. This 29 song (!!) Cd was recorded in the Usa during their 2000 tour, and the sound is pretty good. If you’re a fan of the band, you should enjoy it. http://www.peculiodiscos.com.br (Y.B.)
-
EXECRADORES "111 ?" Cd (Esperanza)
I remember their first Ep and compilation tracks, they were good, basic punk-Hc tunes. Then they turned to more crusty sounds, toured Europe and put out a couple records which I never got to hear. I was expecting much from this Cd, but I was disappointed. It seems they play a whole lot of tracks but only 5 of them are listed. The sound is decent but the production is not powerful enough, a couple tracks are great but some are too long or include noisy riffs which I don’t like. Decent stuff only. Political lyrics. esperanzarecs@bol.com.br (Y.B.)

HATE PM/ NCID/ WEDA 3-way split Cd (Lof)
It’s too bad those 3 bands recently disbanded, cos they were pretty interesting ; HATE PM put out an average/decent metal-core mini-Cd a couple years ago, and these new tracks are great NyHc minus the metal riffs ! HATE PM members went on to form BY MY FISTS, a pretty good NyHc band. NCID (NEVER COLLAPSE INTO DESPAIR), from Belgium, also put out a decent mini-Cd a couple years ago, and those new tracks sound the same, only better. They play mid-tempo New York Hardcore. I saw WEDA live a few years ago and thought they were awesome, bringing to mind the almighty HOGAN’S HEROES. Their first demo was pretty good, but these kids started listening to a lot of emo and it shows on those 3 tracks. All in all the compilation’s pretty good, I just wish there were more than those 9 tracks (demos, live songs, videos, anything). wedacoreben@libertysurf.fr (Y.B.)

STILL NO "attempt to make sense" Cd-r (Selfreleased ?)
I believe this is a demo from a new Dutch band, but the Cd-r looks really professional, so I’m not sure they sell it as a demo. The sound is pretty good, and so is the band. They play melodic old school Hc along the lines of X-ACTO or IGNITE (at times, the singer tries a bit too much to sound like IGNITE’s). Decent socio-personal lyrics too. Ex-members can be reached at : info@fokkum.com (Y.B.)
-
WHITE CHRISTIAN DISASTER "1980-1987" Cd (Ldopa)
Do not get fooled by the title. Yes, this is a posthumous release, but the band existed from 1997 to 2000. They went twice into the studio and recorded those 16 tracks. Half of them are pretty decent punk-Hc songs (they remind me a tiny bit of ACAO DIRETA’s first Lp), and the other half sound a bit more emo, especially because of the terrible screaming vocals, that quite spoil everything as far as I am concerned. The sound is pretty good, the packaging is great, and the lyrics are cool, political and provocative in a BORN AGAINST way. http://www.ldopa.cjb.net (Y.B.)
-
FLICTS "cancoes de batalha" Cd (True rebel)
This is precisely what I thought when I saw them live ; they’re cool, but it’s not the kind of stuff I would listen to at home. FLICTS, from Brazil, play tight, anthemic, energetic punk-rock/ 77’ punk, they sound like a slower COLERA or a faster CLASH maybe. Not bad. Nice socially aware street-type lyrics. http://www.true-rebel-records.de (Y.B.)

-
JAMES BROWN’S HIDE SHOW "votre travail c’est notre santé" Cd-r demo
Hehe, nice cover art. And nice funny & political lyrics too. The music’s ok ; I’ve never enjoyed grindcore bands with drum machines, but at least the production is good, so if it’s your style you won’t regret sending 3 euros (paypal) to : ifeelgood@tele2.fr (Y.B.)
-
BUCKAROO BANZAI "Hollyweed" mCd (Gibet)
New French band playing a mix of stoner rock, garage, Hardcore and punk. No lyric sheet, average sound ; they should have put it out as a demo instead. http://buckaroobanzai.free.fr (Y.B.)
-
ABSTRACTION mailorder distro
Nice Hc/ emo/ punk distro from France with quite a lot of Cds/ zines/ Eps/ Lps for sale at cheap prices. http://abstraction.chez.tiscali.fr (Y.B.)
-

DANS LE MONDE UNE CLASSE EN LUTTE Janvier 2005 newsletter (in French)

EXTERNAL MENACE "the process of elimination" Cd (Dr strange)
Damn, this band has been around since the late 70’s, and I had only heard their early tracks (re-released by CAPTAIN OI). This Cd features an album and two Ep’s recorded in the 90’s, and they’re awesome ! Tight punk-rock with melodic lines and reggae parts. Great production and good punk lyrics. Very nice. http://www.drstrange.com (Y.B.)
-
BACKSIGHT "the rules have changed" Cd-r demo
One more old school Hc band from France !! Who would have thought ? This new band from Avignon (south of France) plays tight "modern" old school Hardcore with melodies, they bring to mind older bands like GORILLA BISCUITS, 7 SECONDS, and more recent ones like FOR THE LIVING, NO TIME TO LOSE, etc. And for a first (?) demo, the production is ace ! Keep an eye out for them. Oh, I could have done without the gnarled vocals, ...and without the 354654751th cover version of "young till I die" ! ;) JulioARMcrew@aol.com (Y.B.)

DODEWARD/ PETETHEPIRATESQUID/ THE THIRD MEMORY/ THEMA ELEVEN split Cd (Impure muzik)
Damn, this French label is specializing in 4 way split emo Cds ! Here again, all bands fit well together, and emo fans can rejoice, there’s lots of discordant guitars, offbeat rhythms, acoustic parts, more intense parts, screaming vocals here. Holland’s DODEWAARD have been making a name of themselves lately ; they play tight emo. PETETHEPIRATESQUID, from Germany, sound a lot like SUBMISSION HOLD, only less punk-Hc, more noisy and emo. The female vocals make for a nice change. THE THIRD MEMORY (France) and THEMA ELEVEN (Czech rep) play long, slow, noisy emo songs. Nice (arty) artwork. Not my style, but well done. http://www.impuremuzik.com (Y.B.)
-
GOVERNMENT ISSUE "strange wine" Cd (Dr Strange)
GOVERNMENT ISSUE put out a couple good records, and some average ones. This live from 1987, now available again on cd, will please fans of the band, but didn’t move me much. Ok stuff considering they were melodic Hc pioneers. http://www.drstrange.com (Y.B.)
-
DESTROY "discography" Cd (Havoc)
Re-release. Famous Minneapolis crust/ punk/ grind band with political lyrics. Pre-CODE 13. I was never a DESTROY fan, but they were ok. http://www.havocrex.com (Y.B.)
-
TO SEE YOU BROKEN "a thief, a poet, an enemy" Cd (Excursion)
I didn’t know EXCURSION were still at it. This is an ok record, but let’s be honest ; if the band members were male instead of female, no one would have signed them. They play decent, typical moshcore, with annoying vocals. Comparisons with the DOUGHNUTS are unavoidable, but I hope they’re more intelligent. Socio-personal lyrics. http://www.excursionrecords.com (Y.B.)
-
PROCLAMATION "let the truth be told" Cd (Life sentence)
Discography. 45 tracks of fast, pissed-off East-coast SxE hardcore. One album, one Ep, one demo and bonus tracks, including YOUTH OF TODAY, SIDE BY SIDE and INFEST covers. This is good ! The production is powerful and the music rips. It’s just too bad they didn’t include a lyric sheet, because they keep on claiming the band was "controversial", but we have no idea why. http://www.lifesentencerecords.com (Y.B.)
-
DISARM "discografia 1997-2001" (No fashion rds)
Uninspired Brazilian disbeat/ crust-punk. Linear DISCHARGE/ ANTI-CIMEX style copycat songs. This doesn’t really move me. If they included a couple mosh parts, or thrashy parts, or reggae parts here and there, they could be ok, but they’re not even trying to sound original. Short political lyrics as always with that kind of music. www.nofashionhc.com (Y.B.)
-
RIISTETYT "orjat ja kurjat" Cd (Usina de sangue)
Typical Scandinavian punk-Hc/dis-beat by this long-running Finnish band (they started in the early eighties !). I saw them live last year, and thought they were ok but too metal and too rock’n’roll. The songs displayed on this Cd sound more direct, more punk, which is cool, but I still can’t say it’s the best band I’ve ever heard... Political lyrics. http://www.usinadesangue.com.br (Y.B.)
-
BROKEN HEROES/ THE WEEKEND WARRIORS "beer, guts and drunk sluts" split Cd (Street anthem)
Those two US bands play uninspired Oï music, like if THE WRETCHED ONES or THE BRUISERS would play drunk in their rehearsal rooms (THE WEEKEND WARRIORS sound slightly better, and I like their band-name). They did not include a lyric sheet, but with song titles like "rich man’s war", "someone’s gonna die", "just cause for a revolution" or "date rape richie", I would have loved to know what they’re singing about. And how about the shitty artwork and title, does "drunk sluts" refer to the photos of their female friends in the booklet ?? www.twwmusic.net (Y.B.)
-
VIVISICK "landing to brazil of Japanese motherfucker" Cd (Läjä)
Everything I dislike about thrashcore.... This only sounds like noise to me. Fast, thrashy Hardcore that doesn’t really go anywhere, it’s noise for the sake of noise, and I can’t stand the screaming vocals to top it all. Besides, I’m totally sick of bands/labels releasing 15 minute long Cds and selling them as full-length. What a bunch of thieves ! There’s thousands of bands looking for labels to release their recordings, it’s criminal to put out Cds that aren’t filled up to the max. And they didn’t even include a lyric sheet. Assholes. http://www.laja.com.br (Y.B.)
-
COMRADES "the early days masked bunch" Cd (SOA)
Who would have said they would have gone so far and put out so many records ? This italian lo-fi grindcore band started more or less as a joke band, they used to write goofy songs and wear masks on stage (hence the title). But in the end, they split up, got back together, and lasted almost 10 years all in all ! This is their complete discography and it’s pretty good ! http://www.soarecords.it (Y.B.)
-
-
ONE FINE DAY "synapsis" Cd (Shove)
Hey, I didn’t even know they had put out another record. I remember their first cd on GENET was quite ok. This "new" one is impressive, although I don’t enjoy that kind of music. This Italian band has evolved into a powerful brand of noisy, intricate Hardcore with complex song-structures, lots of noisy (and boring) parts, offbeat rhythms, etc. Those songs are really powerful. "Modern Hardcore" fans should enjoy. Personal lyrics that don’t make any sense, as always with that kind of music. http://www.shoverecords.com (Y.B.)
-
REACT mailorder list
This French label/distro has been around for ages. Eric still puts out records once in a while, and runs a pretty big punk/Hardcore/crustcore list full of Ep’s, Lp’s, tapes, Cds and zines. eric.waw@wanadoo.fr (Y.B.)
-
E.T.A. Cassette (Masowa kultura)
This pro-quality Polish tape features the "no faith" Lp and the split Lp with TEAR IT UP. I was really eager to hearing this fashionable (Swedish) old style Hc band, and I must admit I was positively surprised ; they play fast-core (everyone does these days), but it sounds like the songs were actually recorded in the early 80’s ! It makes for a nice change in a sea of big, modern, powerful productions. The lyrics are available in both Polish and English and are pretty cool. mkxhub@go2.pl (Y.B.)
-
KUNG FU RICK "motivation to abuse" Cassette (Czerwony diabelek)
Yet another of those trendy "fast-core/ powerviolence" bands I didn’t want to listen to... but here again, I found out they’re pretty cool ! KUNG FU RICK (from the Us) play tight, intense and really fast grindcore/ power-violence. The music rips ! And the lyrics are great as well ! rdevil@poczta.onet.pl (Y.B.)
-
PCP "revelations" Cd (Canard musique)
Fast and powerful Dutch crustcore with dual vocals. The music is pretty good, better than on their first Ep, but I don’t like the big production. Most bands sound like that these days. The lyrics deal with political topics but aren’t too cliché (cops, the system, democracy, animal rights, environment...). I’m sure a lot of people will enjoy this, I do, but would have preferred a rawer, punker production. http://www.canardmusique.org (Y.B.)
-
THE DEAL "pretty words, better days" mCd (Sobermind)
Saw them live in Belgium 2 or 3 years ago, and they made the same impression as on this record ; the music is good, fast & powerful old school SxE Hc reminiscent of MAINSTRIKE, but I still can’t find the band really interesting. Especially the lyrics which don’t really make any sense. Tape it from a friend. thedeal138@hotmail.com (Y.B.)
-
BRIXTON CATS demo Cd-r
Awesome new French band from Paris with a strong (maybe too strong) BRIGADA FLORES MAGON influence. They sound a bit more punk-rock, and have great female vocals. Kinda like LES CLASH mixed with BRIGADA if you will. The music is great, the lyrics are intelligent although a bit naïve ("11 Septembre" is an awesome song), and the sound is great for a first demo. Check them out ! brixtoncats@hotmail.com (Y.B.)

PROPAGANDA POR EL HECHO + TERROR Y MISERIA + CHOCOLAT BILLY + GLEN OR GLENDA, Clermont-Ferrand (France), 05/02/2005, @ Local AC 63 (show review)
The show started with two kids making noise with their drum machine/guitar, and they were way boring. The cool thing with living in Clermont-Ferrand is I get to see bands from all over the place ; PROPAGANDA POR EL HECHO are from Chile, and play really basic punk-rock with political lyrics. I had been listening to basic Hispanic punk-rock all week, and got fed up with them really fast. I learnt they refused to play their show on the next day, because the bar was not self-managed, and there was a bouncer at the door. Considering all the time and money the (DIY) organizers wasted to organize a show/ book a tour for them, this attitude sucks ! Don’t judge a book by its cover, they say ; well, seeing the TERROR Y MISERIA members, I was expecting some typical crustcore (from Argentina), but was delighted to hear super-fast Hardcore with kinda melodious vocals (at least, they were not screaming or growling) ; they brought to mind HHH from Spain ! They were great ! CHOCOLAT BILLY are one of those technical, experimental rock bands that French people love... and they were not that bad ! They were great musicians and played silly, goofy, intense, distorted rock or hardcore. Damn, I don’t know how to describe them. I left before the last band came on stage. Sorry guys. (Y.B.)
-
BELLI COSI "Torino rock’n’roll starz" Cd (Rural muzik)
Very nice, typical Italian melodic punk-Hc. No shitty melodic EPIFAT Hc style here ! There’s a whole bunch of new tracks as well as a lot of good bonus tracks (previous Ep’s) and a video too ! I was a bit disappointed by the lyrics, which aren’t bad and actually pretty funny. http://www.bellicosi.com (Y.B.)
-
BY MY FISTS demo Cd-r
Gosh ! France has some great bands these days. BY MY FISTS play strong, anthemic NyHc (early NyHc, not the metal shit that went afterwards). The sound is good, the musicians are good, and the lyrics are good too ! (and they’re in French, which is a plus). This is a nice demo ! http://www.bymyfists.fr.st (Y.B.)
-
VALUES INTACT "hope of freedom" mCd (Die hard)
It’s no surprise this Italian band got "signed" to this Hungarian label, because they sound a bit like HOLD TRUE and THINKING STRAIGHT ; fast old school Hardcore with a couple melodies added here and there. The music is ok. I don’t like the vocals much, and the lyrics are really cliché and naïve. Decent, not to say average stuff. http://www.diehardxcollective.hu (Y.B.)
-
HAYMARKET "prospect and enslave" Cd (Canardmusique)
This band features ex-members of TOXXIC TV and it shows. The label advertises this as "libertarian punk-Hc ala DEAD KENNEDYS". I believe HAYMARKET could be described as a mix between those two bands. They have their feet deep into punk-hardcore but play really varied music, kinda like TOXXIC TV did, but more powerful, and with vocals that can bring Jello Biafra to mind at times. The sound quality is good, the layout is great (really sarcastic and ironical), and the lyrics are brilliant, attacking the main evil of this modern world ; "the free market". All in all, some songs are excellent, while others are too slow or too technical for my tastes. I believe they should either play fast, or slow, but not in between. ;) The overall Cd leaves me with mixed feelings, but this band has a big potential so keep an eye out for them. http://www.canardmusique.org (Y.B.)
-
THE DIVISIVE "where have all the flowers gun ?" mCd (Self-released)
I traded several of their releases at the same time, and thought they were all pretty cool ! THE DIVISIVE are a Finnish melodic punk-Hc band reminiscent of JUGGLING JUGULARS a bit (just a little less tight). They sing socio-personal lyrics criticizing certain aspects of the Hc scene. http://www.thedivisive.com (Y.B.)
-
REDENCION 9-11 "97-01" Cd (Masapunk)
I thought this was a discography Cd, but I believe it is only old tracks re-recorded and new tracks added as bonus. This Chilean band is probably influenced by bands like FINGERPRINT, UNDONE, ENVY, BORN AGAINST... you know, bands mixing good Hardcore music with screaming vocals and an intellectual/arty approach to things. They’re pretty good music-wise and lyric-wise, although I won’t go crazy about them either, and I think the thing that makes them different is they have a slight post-Hc feel reminiscent of early 90’s US Hc bands (108, BROTHER’S KEEPER, early EQUAL VISION stuff). http://www.amorylucha.org (Y.B.)
-
ROBOT HAS WEREWOLF HAND "the endless Lp" Cd (Art of the underground)
15 tracks in 13 minutes ; fast and raging American Hc punk with dual vocals and original, socially aware lyrics (they have a great song against reunion tours). They sound a bit like the other bands on the label, but play faster. (ARMED WITH INTELLIGENCE, THE YOUNG ONES, or stuff like CONTRA, OPERATION CLIFF CLAVIN, DIVIDE AND CONQUER, etc). http://www.artoftheunderground.com (Y.B.)
-
ALTER-AZIONE "complete discopraphy 1995-1999" Cd (Angry rds)
This is too bad ; this is a great Italian Hardcore band along the lines of early NEGAZIONE (whom they cover), RAWNESS (demo), RAW POWER (2nd Lp) ; they play fast, raging, and varied hardcore. There’s 26 great songs on this record... but it kinda sucks ! It sucks for two reasons : 1) they put the older songs first, which a lot of labels do, so you have to go through a few bad tunes before hearing the great ones ! 2) The band writes great songs, but they never managed to record them properly. What a waste. http://www.angelfire.com/ne/angry (Y.B.)
-
THE DIVISIVE/ T.H.L./ GO APE/ FIST OF FURY split Cd (F.C.R.)
Four melodic Hc/punk bands from Finland, Belgium and Holland. THE DIVISIVE are good, THL are ok, and the two other bands are more FAT WRECK-oriented. It’s a decent Cd, but it’s just too bad there’s no info included about the bands (lyrics, biography, anything). fullcontactresistance@hotmail.com (Y.B.)

MORDA "eighty six" Cd (Genet)
Do people still listen to metal ? I honestly doubt it, because I can’t sell any through my distro. MORDA have that typical 90’s Belgian heavy metal sound (does anybody still remember the H-8000 ?). What can I say ? It’s too late for that kind of stuff. And I’ve never really enjoyed it. Bad lyrics too. http://www.genetrecords.com (Y.B.)

CITA ATTIEKSME mCd (Kablys)
Wow, wow, and then more wow !!! Oh man, I have been listening to a lot of crappy (or let’s say average) records these days, and it is so good to tumble on a Cd like this ! It’s like an oasis in a sea of shit. Their early songs were good, but always lacked a proper production (one demo, one mCd, and tracks on the "Take no heroes" compilation), but the production on this mCd is totally brilliant ! I can hear some east-European influences (BORA, COALITION,...) ; they stayed true to their old school Hc roots, but also included modern Hc influences ; mosh parts + a few noisy, emo or metal riffs... This is one of the best records I’ve heard recently ! http://www.kablys.hardcore.lt (Y.B.)
