HIPPIES OF TODAY Cd (Destructure)
This is one of the best live bands I’ve ever seen. Great musicians and ripping thrashcore/power violence kind of stuff. Ace ! Unfortunately, their studio recordings (I believe this is a discography Cd ?) don’t live up to their live performances. The Cd is great, no problem, but the big production makes them sound a bit like a death metal band. Anyway, if this kind of music is your cup of tea, don’t miss this. Too bad they recently disbanded... :( hippiesxofxtoday@hotmail.com (Y.B.)

GUARDIA NEGRA "adrenalina" Cd (Cochebomba)
This band has BRIGADA FLORES MAGON written all over the place. They’re from America and sing in Spanish, but their first song is in French. For a first album, this is pretty good, although the production could be even better, and the band could have more of a personality on their own. They play punk-rock/ Oï with a couple ska or folk influences, and left-wing, political lyrics. cochebomba@msn.com(Y.B.)

BEURK ! #3Bis vidéo-fanzine avec Jean-Louis COSTES & Marie-Anne Lecomte (NRV prod°) (in French)
ALLIN, LISA SUCKDOG, etc). nrvprod@free.fr (Y.B.)

PAINDRIVER "this has no end" mCd (S.O.A.)
The Cd in itself it totally cute ! Musicwise, PAINDRIVER play uptempo thrashcore/ fast-core/ dis-core/ crustcore bringing to mind HERESY and others. The sound is good. What else can I say. They’re not too original but the record’s still pretty good. Ok lyrics too. http://www.soarecords.it (Y.B.)

LOOKING FOR AN ANSWER/ KONTRAATTAQUE split Cd (La idea)
I had already heard good things about LOOKING FOR AN ANSWER, and with a name like that, I was expecting old school SxE Hc. No such thing here, all you get is super powerful grindcore !! They’re awesome. They have this full sound, a wall of guitars, excellent non-metallic grind played by skilled musicians. Geez, a couple bands come to mind, but I can’t put my finger on them ; maybe RZEZNIA from Poland, or G-ANX from Finland, or maybe even NAPALM DEATH ? KONTRAATTAQUE are a good band, but fall pale in comparison. They play thrashcore-punk-crust and have good songs, but are more generic. http://www.sindios.net/ideas.htm (Y.B.)
-
EZIN IZAN "nora goaz ?" Cd (Cooperaccion)
When did this come out ? ! The band sounds a lot like many old school Hc bands from the late 80’s/ early 90’s, but I think the record came out in the 2000’s. EZIN IZAN is a Basque band, and they sing in Basque which is great. They don’t play typical raging Spanish Hardcore, but melodic positive old school with post-Hardcore elements. BOLD, VERBAL ASSAULT, INSTIGATORS maybe ? The vocalist has a strange voice that makes me think of the POLITICAL ASYLUM singer. This ain’t bad at all ! [Ezin izan, 1677 posta kutxa, 20080 Donostia, Gipuzkoa, Spain] (Y.B.)
-
FLESHPRESS/ BUD JUNKIES split mCd (Hell’s tone)
Two sloooow and heavy bands from Finland. FLESHPRESS have a more stoner rock/Sludge sound, while BUD JUNKIE are a bit more grindcore oriented. Good sound, lyrics about marijuana legalization... Not really my thing. http://www.lprhardcore.net/htr (Y.B.)
-
BARSE "they said it couldn’t happen here..." Cd (Hell’s tone)
English ’77 sounding punk-rock, but recorded in 2002 (I believe). Good sound, slightly noisy guitars, no lyric sheet. What else can I add ? http://www.lprhardcore.net/htr (Y.B.)
-
NOT BROKEN IN SPIRIT Cd (A.O.N.)
Bulgarian New York Hardcore. Not metal, but with a slight Oï touch. Nothing special here, they’re not bad but this kind of music has been done one zillion times before. Typical lyrics but with a slight social bent. Good/decent sound quality. http://aonrcds.cjb.net (Y.B.)
-
CONCIENCIAS MUERTAS "ya nfheni shin düu go’ yotiji" Cd (Cryptas)
I’ve listened to this one a couple time and it has totally grown on me. CONCIENCIAS MUERTOS, from Mexico, sound a lot like a couple bands from the 80’s. They are a punk band, with a typical punk sound, but have added synthesizers to their "raw" music. I’m usually totally allergic to synthesizers, but in this case, it works well ! I can’t put my finger on the bands they bring to mind, I remember MORT A VENISE on an old French compilation, as well as a german band, but what was their name ?... Whatever. Try this, it’s "different". Oh, but I’ve just noticed it was recorded in 1999 ; are they still around ? cons_internacion@hotmail.com (Y.B.)
-
DESOBEDIENCIA CIVIL "no hay libertad sin desobediencia" Cd (Cryptas)
I listened to it a dozen times without fixing my mind about it. There are some truly good songs, and some average ones. On the whole, this is a decent band playing typical anarcho crust-punk with dual vocals and anarcho-lyrics in Spanish (they’re from mexico). They remind me quite a bit of a lesser good ASIDE. Cliché, but decent. cons_internacion@hotmail.com (Y.B.)
-
END OF APRIL "divided by numbers" mCd (Seamiew)
Dutch tight & varied new school/ Nu-metal/ Hc/ emo. They aren’t too bad, but I think it’s obvious these guys wish they would go mainstream, as they even signed deals with big sponsors to boost their careers (Converse, Koch, Framus...). Introspective lyrics. http://www.seamiewrecords.nl (Y.B.)
-
ATOMICA Cd (self released ?)
Female fronted punk-rock from Peru, with personal lyrics. Comparisons with COJOBA are unavoidable because A) they play punk-rock B) they’re female fronted and C) they sing in Spanish. ATOMICA have strong rock roots, they’re almost more rock-punk than punk-rock, if you see what I mean. It’s a really decent Cd, ...but COJOBA are much better, hehe. atomicamail@yahoo.com (Y.B.)
-
OI POLLOI "six of the best" Cd (Boislève)
At last, a reissue of this classic Cd/Ep’s ! RUGGER BUGGER from the Uk first pressed 1500 copies, but the label went under and we asked OI POLLOI to repress it. There’s 6 Ep’s on this one, documenting the band’s history from 1984 to 1999, and kind of celebrating their 20th anniversary ! You got early Oi tunes like "boot down the door", "hands off Nicaragua", as well as faster punk-Hc classics like "John Major fuck you", "guilty" or "bash the fash". 27 tracks and 65 minutes of music, plus a big booklet with lyrics and liner notes. What’s wrong with reviewing your own records anyway ? ;) coinxxxcoin@yahoo.fr (Y.B.)
-
FORCA MACABRA "hysteria - edicao Brasileira" Cd (No fashion rds)
I only knew two FORCA MACABRA records, and I didn’t enjoy them much, but I know realize I missed all the great ones ! This is a Cd designed at the Brazilian market, with songs taken from various records ; the music rips ! FORCA MACABRA play fast, tight and powerful punk-Hc with metal, crust, dis-beat influences. If you’re not familiar with the band, this Cd is a great start. http://www.nofashionhc.com (Y.B.)
-
THE GEE STRINGS "arrest me" Cd (Red star)
I believe this is the band’s third album. THE GEE STRINGS are a female-fronted punk’n’roll band from Germany. They have a strong 77’punk sound ; I was saying my friend they sounded like THE AVENGERS, and just a few minutes later they were covering one of their songs ! But they are much more "rock’n’roll" than THE AVENGERS, and I like them less. http://www.geestrings.de (Y.B.)
-
ANAL THUNDER "cheap wine and quality time" mCd (Hell’s tone)
Melodic Hc/punk-rock from Finland, with a provocative/ snotty attitude. The cover’s quite funny. The lyrics are not too bad (I was expecting worse !). They remind me a bit of NO FX, lyricwise and musicwise. http://www.lprhardcore.net/htr (Y.B.)
-
ANARCHUS "vals of hate" Cd (Cryptas)
Sub-titled "15 aniversario Cd comp". Damn, this Mexican grindcore band is still at it after all these years ! This Cd is not too interesting if you already own their previous Cds ; it features tracks from their split with CSSO (Japan) and their live Cd, as well as 3 tracks from their 1995 demo. The only interesting thing are the first four tracks, which are taken from a 1987 demo but were re-recorded for the occasion. These ones rule ! Fast manic grind with hateful blasphemous lyrics ("vomit in the church" !- yeah !). The sound on the other tracks is less good, and maybe more metal too. A decent band nonetheless, that AGATHOCLES fans should enjoy. cons_internacion@hotmail.com (Y.B.)
-
THREAT OF RIOT "take your time" Cd (Goodwill)
As always with Italian records, one zillion labels coproduced the Cd, which is cool. I had heard good things about THREAT OF RIOT since they toured Europe last year with FPO from Macedonia. THREAT OF RIOT have dual vocals that give them a crust touch, but the music sounds quite "old school", and at times the guitar lines are quite melodic ; the result is pretty raging uptempo Hc-punk with interesting lyrics about various topics. The Cd is really decent, it still lacks a little something to make it memorable, but I’ll be glad to check out their next releases. http://www.threatofriot.com (Y.B.)

STALINS WAR demo Cd-r
This underrated Californian band has been around for a few years now, and has put out a couple albums. Does anyone remember the almighty SHORTSIGHT from Belgium ? Well, STALINS WAR is like SHORTSIGHT mixed with WALLS OF JERICHO, if you will. Nice blend of punk-Hardcore roots with metal riffs and killer female vocals. I totally love the music, although this demo, which was recorded in 2003, sounds a bit more metal than their previous stuff. I was a bit disappointed by the personal lyrics as I was expecting more politically charged ones. http://www.stalinswar.org (Y.B.)
-
PETROGRAD "nine one one" Cd (Christopher’s records)
3rd album, and still those nice melodies that stick to your head. Not bad. I still prefer their early recordings (especially the "Isabelle" Cd), but they really have great songs on this one too. And the booklet’s so thick, there’s tons of political writings ! It’s a good record. I wonder if they’re still together, since they recently underwent line-up changes. christophersrecords@internet.lu (Y.B.)

-
PETROGRAD/ DADDY LONGLEG split Cd (Falling down)
PETROGRAD still play their own style of melodic pop-punk, who can I compare them with ? J-CHURCH ? HÜSKER DÜ ? ? DADDY LONGLEG are similar, but more "melodic Hc" oriented (think : EPITAPH rds). Both bands are good and write social & personal lyrics. falling-down@gmx.de (Y.B.)
-
ABUSO SONORO "herencia" Cd (6 weeks)
This came out a couple years ago. I was a fan of early ABUSO SONORO (they sounded so much like early HIATUS !), this Cd is really different but still pretty good. They’re more thrashcore influenced these days, and sound like a mix between UNHINGED, ASIDE and EXTREME NOISE TERROR. Ok stuff ! http://www.sixweeksrecords.com(Y.B.)
-
DOMINIC "running with scissors" mCd (Dead letter rds)
DOMINIC, PHILIPPE, RACHEL, JULIETTE,..., damn, haven’t emo bands used all possible first names for band names ? DOMINIC hail from Norway and play quite powerful emo along the lines of CHILDREN OF FALL, ICONOCLAST, YAGE, etc, with abstract social lyrics. They’re pretty good at what they’re doing. http://www.deadletterrecords.net (Y.B.)
-
-
SENS INTERDIT Cd (Trauma social)
Pretty good punk from Paris with mostly female vocals. They have that typical French sound, and are half-way between DISPOMANIE, LYSTERIA, HEYOKA and other basic, uptempo French punk-rock bands. The sound is good for a first album, and I enjoyed the lyrics. http://www.multimania.com/trauma (Y.B.)
-
DESPERADO "evacuation" Cd (Dead letters rds)
Norwegian emo with a chaotic beat and garage influences. Brings to mind REFUSED, THE INTERNATIONAL NOISE CONSPIRACY, BURN HOLLYWOOD BURN, THE ELEKTROCUTION, or even BIKINI KILL and LE TIGRE at times. Very fashionable stuff. Abstract social lyrics. http://www.deadletterrecords.net (Y.B.)
-
DESKARGA ETILIKA "apunkalipse now" Cd (Punk off and die)
Powerful Portuguese punk-metal/ dis-punk/ crustcore with fairly good socially aware lyrics. They certainly haven’t invented anything new, but they’re a nice copycat of FORCA MACABRA, DOOM, ANTI CIMEX,... ; 15 raging tracks, this is a good Cd. deskarga_etilika@iol.pt (Y.B.)
-
AGROTOXICO/ RASTA KNAST split Cd (Red star)
Hehe, cool idea : RASTA KNAST (German punks) covering Brazilian punk bands like RATOS DE PORAO, COLERA or ZUMBIS DO ESPACO, and AGROTOXICO (Brazilian punks) covering German bands like SLIME, RECHARGE or CANAL TERROR. 10 songs, 10 good covers. Funny. redstar@osite.com.br (Y.B.)

FREE FROM PENURY #2/ HUH #5 split fanzine
Oops... Another zine I took ages to read. Came out in 2002. Both zines are in English, although from Malaysia. FREE FROM PENURY is really good ; there’s interviews with NEW WINDS from Portugal, OPUS DEAD from Spain, SUMMER LEAGUE from Italy. Really international and covering all the spectrum of the DIY Hc scene. There are also columns and reviews. HUH is more original, but there’s no music in it and I like it less. It’s kind of a diary/ random thoughts written by two Malaysian girls. http://www.cactusdistro.cjb.net (Y.B.)
-
ARGIES "himnos de combate" Cd (Coche bomba)
These guys have been around since at least 1986 and I had never heard of them !?! Shit. ARGIES are a great Argentinean punk-rock band, with a strong CLASH influence. Honestly, they’re like THE CLASH singing in Spanish. Not bad ! I was sad to notice there’s no lyric sheet provided with this digipack, and that this is only a "best off" compilation. cochebomba@msn.com (Y.B.)
-
OVERPOWERING "cementario de esperanzas" Cd (La idea)
New spanish grind band. Being on LA IDEA, I was expecting some sloganistic anarcho-lyrics, but although they do write political songs, I was pleasantly surprised to read good introspective lyrics as well. Musically, I guess they are influenced by bands like AGORAPHOBIC NOSEBLEED, ASSÜCK and the likes. I’m sorry to say I didn’t enjoy them much, mostly because of the drum machine. It just doesn’t fit with that kind of music. I also believe the production is a bit weird, maybe too clean. I don’t know. Get a real drummer and you’ll get a great band. http://www.sindios.net (Y.B.)
-
GATO APLASTADO Cd (tpzshit rds)
Fast Hardcore from Spain with socially aware lyrics, in the MUKEKA DI RATO or RATOS DE PORAO vein. They even cover HHH ! There’s some synthesizer in some of the songs, which gives the band an original touch. el_moya@mixmail.com (S.B.) Second review : Nice surprise from Spain, really fast, slightly technical Hc like GRB a bit. They include synthesizers at times, and I don’t enjoy the vocals much, but that’s ok. And they do an HHH cover ! I hope they’ll keep their Hc roots and won’t go more technical. el_moya@mixmail.com (Y.B.)
-
KÄRNVAPEN ATTACK mCd (Mala raza)
Angry Spanish punk with political lyrics. Fast & short blasts reminiscent of LOS CRUDOS (obviously) or even NEGATIVE APPROACH, or Scandinavian classics like TERVET KADET, MOB 47, etc. The music is great, but I was annoyed by the screaming vocals. palo84@hotmail.com (Y.B.)
-
NOISE... "le temps qu’il faut" Cd-r (Bencore)
It’s written on the sleeve that this French band has been around since 1996 ; well, I run a gig-listing, a website, a label, a distro, and I had never ever heard of them !! Damn. And this demo’s pretty good ! They play really fast hardcore with strong emo overtones. Kinda like WHAT’S WRONG, WEDA, FINGERPRINT or ANOMIE, you see ? The sound is good, too bad there’s no lyric sheet provided. http://www.noise01.fr.st (Y.B.)
-
WOJCZECH " chronologic discography 95-2002" Cd (Dratsab)
28 tracks of fast, manic grind/thrash from Germany. These crazy people have toured all over the world ; Asia, South America... ! They’re not bad, maybe a bit too noisy and chaotic for me, and I could also do without those screaming vocals. And I would have enjoyed a lyric sheet too. This said, fans of extreme music should enjoy. kamal_ishak@hotmail.com (Y.B.)
-
GOLD BLADE "psycho" mCd (Captain Oi)
Fairly typical english punk-rock here. This mini-Cd features one pretty good song taken from one of their albums, three live songs (average/ok sound quality, recorded during their Russian tour (!)) and two of their own songs covered by friends of them : OUTL4W (pretty good Uk punk-rock ; I first thought it was a female singer until I read the cover and realized it was a band of really young kids) + a Scottish band named BUZZBOMB. It’s a cool idea to invite bands to play on one’s album. This aside, it’s an ok mini-Cd but a bit too "rock" for me. http://www.goldblade.com (Y.B.)
-
NOTHING GOLD CAN STAY "hate is not the opposite of love" Cd (Genet)
This band features ex-members of H-STREET (German old school) and NEWBORN (Hungarian metal-core). They play modern Hc and remind me quite a bit of SHORTSIGHT (that Belgian old school SxE band that turned to heavy metal), and THUMBS DOWN comes to mind as well. They have an old school sound with metal and even Nu-metal parts, and screaming vocals. They’re not too bad but I prefer my old school metal-free. Some of the lyrics are personal, and the socially oriented ones are quite abstract. http://www.genetrecords.com (Y.B.)
-
NIKMAT OLALIM "battle legacy" Cd-r (Boshet)
As far as I know, this new Israeli band features ex-members of DIR YASSIN. The packaging is cool for a demo, the sound is ok, and they write good, really radical & interesting political lyrics about the situation in their country. Unfortunately, I found the music to be pretty basic, and I didn’t like the vocals at all. The band is interesting and I’m sure they have the capacity to write great songs, but they have to rehearse a bit more and focus on music rather than on politics (who would have thought I would have said this one day !). http://www.gutzy.com/boshet (Y.B.)
-
RASTA KNAST "bandeira pirata" Cd (Red star)
Well produced German punk with a few melodic and punk-rock lines. Actually brings to mind classic German bands like SLIME or... ach, I forgot their names. TERRORGRUPPE ? TOTEN HOSEN ? No, I can’t remember. Anyway, they’re not bad. The lyrics are in German and translated into Portuguese, which doesn’t help (!), but they seem to be of a social nature. http://www.rasta-knast.de (Y.B.)
-
GOLD BLADE "who was the killa ?" mCd (Twenty stone blatt)
First, this Cd comes in a very nice cardboard sleeve and I wanted to point it out because it’s rare to see punk-rock bands put out records with original packaging. There’s four tracks, most of which are re-recorded versions of previously released songs, except they’ve added horns which add great catchy hooks to the songs. There’s also a video track as bonus. On the whole this is ok, maybe a bit too rock and not punk enough for me. http://www.goldblade.com (Y.B.)
-
B-CORE 2004 DANDOLO TODO sampler/ Cd compilation (B-Core)
Over an hour of unbearable insipid shit. B-CORE was one of the best European Hc labels back in the days, it’s such a shame they have become so mainstream. All of these bands play pop. Not even indie pop or rock, this is just pop and I’m even surprised I don’t hear them in the supermarkets where I shop. http://www.bcoredisc.com (Y.B.)
-
HOPE DIES LAST "the time is now" mCd (Hodila)
This is a Latvian Hc band, and of course they sound like CITA ATTIEKSME, NON SKID (whom they feature ex-members of), BORA and other bands from that area. They’re really quite good, but I was expecting something better. The music is old school Hc mixed with Hc/punk, the production is good without being powerful, and the lyrics are ok too (socio-personal stuff). Nothing groundbreaking here, but a band to look out for. hdlhc@hotmail.com (Y.B.)
-
WOOF "no retreat" mCd (Horror business)
Geez, cool surprise ! This new German band plays fast and tight old school Hardcore with a modern sound, a good production, and a few mosh parts. They remind me of other "modern old school" bands like LOWPUNCH, THE DEAL, etc. The lyrics are quite funny and original, they deal with personal, social and scene related issues. I’d like to hear more. http://www.horrorbiz.de (Y.B.)
-
IN THE SHIT "a world of..." Cd (Mass prod)
Hehe, nice band name and cool title too. The production on this album is more powerful than on the first one, but I believe the music stayed the same ; it’s Uk punk. What else can I say ? It’s not really hardcore, it’s not metal, it’s not Oï, it’s just that ’82 punk sound with a modern production. I like them, their first Cd was good and so were their live performances, but I have always thought they lacked a little something. Negative, hateful, socially aware lyrics. http://www.massprod.com (Y.B.)
-
NON SKID/ HUGO split cassette (Sz.S.S.)
This Russian pro-quality tape features two Latvian Hc bands from the early 2000’s. Side A is NON SKID’s complete discography (Cd + live tracks), they were a really good Hardcore band, somewhere between old school Hc and punk-Hc. They now go under the name HOPE DIES LAST (see above). HUGO used to play uptempo, bass-driven Hardcore with a few grindy or experimental parts, maybe akin to UNITED MUTATIONS for instance. Too bad the sound quality on their side is a bit poor. http://www.svinokop.narod.ru (Y.B.)
-
NOC WALPURGII 1996-2002 Cd compilation (Refuse)
NOC WALPURGII is a big antisexist festival happening every year in Poland. They’ve taken songs recorded live by 24 bands that played there, and put out this Cd with a big booklet documenting on the fest. The Cd’s nice, but I’m no big fan of live recordings in general. The sound is ok and most of the bands are good : HARUM SCARUM, HISTERIA, LIFECYCLE, PIEKLO KOBIET, POST REGIMENT, SILIKONFEST, OIL, ZLODZIEJE ROWEROW, etc. The Cd starts off with a girl screaming "fuck off macho pogo !" but hey, I like macho pogo ! :( http://www.refuserecords.prv.pl (Y.B.)
-
MADBALL "down by law" Cd-r (DMS)
I saw MADBALL live a couple times, but I don’t think I had ever heard any of their records apart from the first seven inch ! I was expecting some much more metal tunes, and was surprised at how old school and groovy these tracks sounded. Not too bad, despite the clear production. This said, and even though I don’t care much for MADBALL, the guy behind those records is a fucking asshole. He’s making money off the bands, off the labels, off the distros and off the fans by selling these shitty homeburnt bootlegs at high prices. There’s not even a track listing ! Only two photos of the band. I’m pretty sure some guy from Italy’s behind this, otherwise I would have said some nerd from Paris, or LOST N FOUND. Don’t buy this shit ! [no address, coward] (Y.B.)
-
FEUD "battling bastards of freedom" Cd (Boisleve + others)
This is their first real full length, but they already appeared on various compilations before, and put out a couple demos. The music is a bit faster than before ; they play fast & raging old school Hc reminiscent of BLOODPACT a bit, with a few danceable parts here and there. They do great cover songs of NATIONS ON FIRE, GI AND THE IDIOTS and the almighty BIOFEEDBACK. It is sad the production is a bit poor, because this is a good album and it would have been perfect with a fuller sound. Too bad the Cd was also supposed to come with a good video tract, which was not included for technical reasons. The lyrics are really political, a bit more in depth and intellectual than the songs on the "Take no heroes" compilation (consequently, I like them less :) ). The band split up last year, but they seem to get back together from time to time. coinxxxcoin@yahoo.fr (Y.B.)
