PLASTINATION Cd-r
Not even sure if this is a demo or the Cd-r version of a real album. They’re an Italian Hardcore band featuring ex-members of various other bands, and play technical, really varied Hardcore, bringing to mind the BAD BRAINS ("quickness" era), VICTIMS FAMILY, maybe GRB from Spain or NOCIF from France (early 90’s). They mix up punk, melodic Hc, jazz, metal and rock, but the main influence remains Hardcore. The sound is good and the lyrics are even translated into French ! They are very poetical and deal with social issues. http://www.ecn.org/elpaso/plastination_web_page/plastination.htm (Y.B.)

BOYFUNK #1 fanzine
I hadn’t read a gay-punk-zine in ages. Actually I had neither read a personal zine for a long time. Nothing special apart from the fact that it is a pocket-size zine that comes with a patch and sticker ; personal rants, columns, poetry (urgh), and articles from a queer point of view. boy_on_boy_love@yahoo.com (Y.B.)

NUOC MAMA Cd (bizouprod)
This was sent to me at the same time as the PANTIN HILARE Cd-r, and both bands feature a common member, ie that ex-HATE FORCE/ UNCLE SLAM guy. That’s about where the comparison ends ; NUOC MAMA play slow, melodic, (almost) instrumental rap. I’m not familiar with that kind of music, but they call it "trip-hop". I only enjoy Hardcore-rap, but if you’re into that kind of stuff, give it a try… ffly@club-internet.fr (Y.B.)

FUN "szklarska poreba" Cd (If society)
Finnish (mostly) instrumental noisy-jazzy-experimental Hardcore. A couple riffs made me think of VICTIMS FAMILY or NO MEANS NO, with a more noisy/ psychedelic/ garage approach. Long songs, personal lyrics that don’t have any sense, nice packaging. Not my cup of tea. http://www.ifsociety.com (Y.B.)
-
HERO DISHONEST "let your poison scream" Cd (If society)
From the same label that sent me the FUN Cd reviewed above, but this album gets much closer to my tastes ! I had received a HERO DISHONEST tape a few months ago and thought it was excellent. This new album is pretty good, but sounds much too "fashionable" for me ; the production is a bit too clean or powerful, and the music is fast, thrashcore/ punk/ hardcore with that "I don’t care about anything " attitude. I liked their earlier tracks more, but I’m sure a lot of people will love this Cd. + Socio-personal lyrics in both English and Finnish. http://www.ifsociety.com (Y.B.)
-
SPYGLASS/ ETERNAL TANGO split Cd (self-released)
This has "modern Hardcore" written all over. I know one shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but it was too obvious this time around. SPYGLASS & ETERNAL TANGO mix emo, metal, hardcore, with an emphasis on emo. The sound quality is good and that kind of music should appeal to quite a lot of kids. It’s nice to see there is an underground scene in Luxembourg besides PETROGRAD and DEFDUMP. Introspective lyrics. http://www.eternaltango.net (Y.B.)

GRAYHOUND "the sound and the fury" demo Cd-r
Coming out of nowhere (ok, they’re from Brittany – west of France), this new Hc band was a great surprise ; they play old school Hardcore with various influences like punk, modern Hardcore, rock’n’roll… They remind me a bit of bands like ACTIONS FALL SHORT, KID DYNAMITE… "modern old school" then ? The sound is good and the layout’s pretty cool. The best part for me were the lyrics ; it’s really rare to have French bands with interesting lyrics. The songs deal with the Aids epidemic, politics/elections (nice stance against voting), 7th heaven (that conservative Us Tv programme), and taking their city back. I hope they’ll go far… http://www.grayhound.fr.st (Y.B.)
-
THE APOLEXY TWIST ORCHESTRA/ THE KINETIC CRASH COOPERATION split Cd (Basement record)
"Emo-violence" (two terms that can’t mix) from Germany. Offbeat, crazy, arty emo. Personal, intellectual, poetical lyrics. How did they end up on a Malaysian label ? http://www.thecooperation.de (Y.B.)
-
SUBMERGE "album" Cd (Throne)
I had only heard their side of the split Ep with ANANDA, which was ok but sounded too much like ANANDA, and was surprised to notice the progression on these new tracks. I would describe SUBMERGE as "noisy-grind". They have those noisy riffs mixed with fast & chaotic rhythm beats. It’s tight, fast and powerful ; and even though I don’t enjoy that kind of music much, I have to admit they’re really quite original. The nice packaging and the pretty good socially-aware lyrics suit their music really well, too. http://www.thronerecords.com (Y.B.)
-
WITHIN REACH "complaint ignored" Cd (Bad taste)
Man, what a surprise. WITHIN REACH used to be a pretty good old school Hc band from Sweden. They’re still from Sueden, but they have turned to heavy metal ! :( Their new style ain’t too bad, it’s heavy, quite powerful and brings to mind later EARTH CRISIS, MINISTRY, later SYSTRAL, HEAVEN SHALL BURN, later REFUSED, NINE, anything metal actually (I’m not too familiar with those bands). Decent socio-personal lyrics. What a ridiculous change when you think about it. http://www.badtasterecords.se (Y.B.)

HORDE OF ZOMBIE + CEREBRAL REGURGITATION + SEXE SUR LA VOIE PUBLIQUE split Cd-r
These three jazz bands… oh ok, I believe you had already guessed what kind of music these bands play, right ? There we go ; three lo-fi, DIY, shitty grind/noise bands from Cherbourg (France). Lots of goofiness, craziness, silliness all over the place. HORDE OF ZOMBIE play grind/noise, SEXE SUR LA VOIE PUBLIQUE sound much more punk (and are pretty cool), CEREBRAL REGURGITATION are more metal and are actually pretty good ! This Cd-r is available for cheap (2 euros I think ?) from : http://www.boudiou.net (Y.B.)
-

OPENIGHTMARE "sliced by a turbomachine" Cd (Mosaic music)
I wanted to check this out because the band was advertising themselves as "power punk-rock". I asked them to send me a promo copy of their album, and, well, I don’t know where’s the punk in this ? OPENIGHTMARE is just another French rock band. There might be a couple sludge, metal, or punk elements here and there, but on the whole this is just overproduced rock. There’s no lyric sheet provided. If you like French rock… http://www.openightmare.net (Y.B.)
-
DYSTOPIA "the aftermath" Cd (Throne)
Seems like this band has put out two discography Cds, and this is the second one, featuring one Ep, one Lp, and two splits. DYSTOPIA are pretty original as they mix lots of different influences ; sludge, emo, Hardcore, power-violence… It’s not really emo, but it sounds emo because of the screaming voice. They don’t really remind me of any other band, maybe only KEETH from Australia, or some intricate Hc bands on FLAT EARTH rds. Slow, heavy, a bit noisy or discordant, with fast outbursts of speed. Not really my style. Nice dark/ negative political lyrics though. http://www.thronerecords.com (Y.B.)
-
PANDEMONIUM "sex, drugs, stocks,…" 2xCd (Coalition)
Classic early european (Dutch) thrashcore. 2 cds, 63 tracks, complete booklet… this is the kind of discography I love. The thing is, I’ve never been a big fan of this band, it all sounds like noise to me,… well, it’s still better than 80% of everything that’s coming out these days. :) http://www.coalition-records.com (Y.B.)
-
MELTIN’ SUN "chapter eleven" Cd (Punkarre records)
Italian melodic Hc/ pop-punk. Can’t tell much more. It’s ok stuff that bores me to death. The sound is good but the production isn’t really powerful. Couldn’t decipher the lyrics. equalrights@libero.it (Y.B.)

IN THE NAME OF PUNK vol.3 Cassette (Peepers)
Wow ! I’ve already said Indonesia had the best scene in the world, and this tape ain’t gonna change my mind about that ! The packaging is cool (pro-quality) and absolutely all of the 26 bands rip ! There’s everything ; from punk-rock to fast hardcore, but all bands are powerful, play tight music, and offer good quality recordings. This is an excellent overview of the underground scene in this country. [Peepers rds, Po box 6011, Jksgn 12060, Jakarta, Indonesia] (Y.B.)
-
A-ROSE/ RECONSTRUCT split cassette (Hatred nation)
I had already heard RECONSTRUCT on their split Cd with ATRET from Indonesia. Both bands on this pro-quality cassette play really fast punk. RECONSTRUCT almost sound a bit crusty at times. A-ROSE play super-fast punk, I like them a lot ! Although none of the band members are excellent musicians, the decent sound quality fits that raw and basic brand of Hardcore well. It is also very nice to see Malaysian bands with real political, antisexist (and atheist ?) lyrics. kolatis@hotmail.com (Y.B.)
-
PANTIN HILARE demo Cd-r (self-released)
I was surprised to learn this band features one former member of HATE FORCE, one of the first French New York Hc bands. But the music is really different though ; PANTIN HILARE play a mix of technical Hardcore and noisy-Hc (imagine VICTIMS FAMILY, NO MEANS NO mixed with HELMET or anything on AMPHETAMINE NOISE rds). Not really my style, but this kind of music is gonna get really popular again soon. I wish the sound would have been better. Nice poetical lyrics, nice packaging too (looks pretty emo/ arty). pantinhilare@club-internet.fr (Y.B.)
-
DEAD CHRETIENS "weatax" tape (self-released)
Decent band name (Chretien is the name of the Canadian prime minister), but boring goofy punk-rock played by a bunch of bored teenagers. These kids don’t care about nothing, there’s no lyric sheet included and the sound sucks because it was recorded in their rehearsal room. Maybe with a proper recording… spunkzine@yahoo.com (Y.B.)
-
JAPAN YOUTH CREW compilation cassette (One voice)
I have no idea whether this tape was released on a Cd before ? This is a Malaysian pressing, and an interesting document that features 5 Japanese old school Hc bands (2 songs each). The sound is decent and the music is pretty good. I just saw a program on Tv that showed the Japanese society was very conformist and conservative, and that Japanese kids tend to identify with American or european trends, and copy them to the max in order to escape this situation. Like, right after school they would take off their uniforms and rush into different molds : punk, gothic, techno, rap or whatever trend they can lay their hands on. I believe this is the case here, because the band members totally espouse the look of American SxE kids (sportswear, etc), use the same imagery (fonts, etc) and try to sing about the same topics (friendship, loyalty, etc), but their English is so bad the lyrics don’t really mean anything. As always with Japanese bands, the music rips though. :) onevoice@singnet.com.sg (Y.B.)
-
BUBON STORY fanzine (in French)
-
SKA-P "que corra la voz !" cassette (BMG)
Am I reviewing a BMG release or what ? Ok, just for once, so stop complaining… Believe it or not, I had never heard this really famous spanish band before… and I liked it ! Spanish bands always rule, even when they’re mainstream. SKA-P play tight and pretty powerful ska-core with political lyrics. Most of the songs are really good. It’s nice to listen to different stuff from time to time. Ok, then it’s always pathetic to hear bands sing against consumerism or US imperialism when they themselves signed to a multinational corporation… :) (Y.B.)
-
PARKINSON "tolak segala kekerasan" cassette (Broken vision)
Pro-quality tape as always in Asia. Makes up for a nice demo ! The sounds’ pretty decent, the music is raging, not too original crust-grind-punk from Malaysia. This bands’ getting pretty famous now, right ? "No copyright", benefit release. Nice. brokenvision@hotmail.com (Y.B.)
-
THE OATH "transatlantic thrash terror" cassette (Asas)
Same as below. Never enjoyed THE OATH much, neither live nor in the studio. Fast, frantic thrashcore, screaming vocals... There’s some good moments, but on the whole, it just sounds like noise and screams to my ears. Maybe I’m getting old... asas@excite.com (Y.B.)
-
CHARLES BRONSON "youth attack" cassette (homegrown)
And yet another Asian pro-quality cassette... I’m no CHARLES BRONSON fan, I dislike the screaming vox, but if you enjoy the band, get this cheap tape. Oh yeah, there’s 20 tracks on it. (no address mentioned, from Singapore)
-
VITAMIN X cassette (ugly smokers)
This incredible professional-tape was released in Malaysia and compiles almost everything the band has done ; I’d say over an hour of music for about 3 or 4 euros at best ! Damn. I’ve never enjoyed their early recordings much, but VITAMIN X’s latest "down the drain" Lp rips ! If you like fast hardcore, get this ! uglysmokecore@yahoo.com (Y.B.)
-
J CHURCH "one Mississippi" Cd (Honest don’s)
Damn ! These pop-punk kings have been around forever, and just like the RAMONES, they’ve been playing the same style of music since their beginnings. This long album is ok. It’s too rock for me. I feel respect for J CHURCH but the only record I’ve ever really liked was the first one. honeybearrecords@hotmail.com (Y.B.)

LA PETROLEUSE distro-list
Coming out of nowhere, LA PETROLEUSE starts off with a huge list of alternative books, videos, fanzines and records. Mostly written material about politics, sexuality, animal rights… This is one of the only distros like this in France. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention most of the books are written in French, but check the website at : http://www.la-petroleuse.com (Y.B.)

GOODWILL RECORDS Distribution list # 24
Big, long-running italian distro. Lots of punk & Hc records at pretty decent prices. Lots of melodic Hc stuff. http://www.goodwillrecords.net (Y.B.)
-
POINTING FINGER "best bruises collection" Cd (Goodwill)
Yummy, Portugal’s finest are back with a nice discography featuring all of their vinyl 7" – four of them, including the awesome split with POLLUTION and their first "illusion of perfection" Ep. Wow ! So you get 40 minutes of tight, raging yet melodic old school SxE Hc along the lines of GORILLA BISCUITS, VALUE DRIVEN, or YOUTH OF TODAY. I think it’s sad they didn’t include their good demos (many bands get ashamed of their debut recordings although they’re often the rawest and best ones !), or even a live set, cos they had 30 more minutes to fill on a Cd like that. Anyway… And did I mention the intelligent socially aware lyrics ? http://www.goodwillrecords.net (Y.B.)

"MASSACRE A LA DEBROUSSAILLEUSE" Festival, Brest, 02 & 03/07/2004 (show review)
I didn’t really know what to expect as the show was illegal and most f the bands were unknown to me. The gig took place in the middle of nowhere, in the hills in the deep west of Brittany. It was really nice. They had several fields available for cars, for the camping site, and for the show. Around 200 people turned up, most were friendly although we could have made without a couple trouble-makers. It’s always a bit risky to organize outdoor gigs in the most rainy part of France ! The weather was ok, it’s too bad the organizers had incredible problems with the generator. Anyways, there were tons of bands, I only really liked like one or two : SHENRON were great. Tight, modern, melodic Hc from Brest. Great surprise. Keep an eye out for them. WARKORPSE : last show ?!? Too bad as they were ok... I was dying to see GEORGE BITCH JUNIOR again after all these months, and thought they were good but sounded too much like SPAZZ ! WANTED were totally awesome ! These cool guys play super fast punk. They all wear mohawks ! And they told me their music had slowed down so I wish I had heard them before ! LA RAIA are a weird experimental theatre/ punk-rock band from Paris. If you dig early BERURIER NOIR, you should like them. VAMPIROS LESBOS are not even lesbian (ha !), it’s just two girls on stage and they were cool ! JAMES BROWN HIDE SHOW are decent, but I don’t like the fact that they use a drum machine. And when they invited GEORGE BITCH JUNIOR’s drummer on stage, they ripped indeed ! LOUT SOCIETY CURSE : interesting new French band, 100% crust stuff ; not bad. ELYSIUM are getting "big" and it’s no surprise because they play tight & powerful grindcore with a few metal riffs and (argh !) screaming (emo) vocals. MARECHAL PUTAIN from Bordeaux sound like early 80’s French anarchopunk bands. I liked some of their songs ok. I can’t remember the other bands that played. MISSPENT YOUTH from Paris : ok melodic punk-Hc. PANDANTAGUEULE : basic punk-rock played by youngsters. What else ? (Y.B.)
-
NEUROPATHIA "graveyard cowboys" Cd (Self made god)
Strong polish grindcore with a really slight metal sound and a powerful production. The music’s good, but the production is too good for that kind of music, the photos of the band members are a bit weird, they wear long hair, the tile of the record sucks, and no lyric sheet was included... Metal fans should enjoy it. http://www.selfmadegod.com (Y.B.)
-
VOICELESS + BIALA GORACZKA, Angers (France), 27/06/2004, @ l’Etincelle (show review)
As usual in Angers, only a handful of people turned up, but the atmosphere was fun & friendly. VOICELESS feature several ex-members of SHORTCUT and basically play the same kind of straight forward old school Hc. I like their songs, but they need to practise more. BIALA GORACZKA, coming out of nowhere (ok, it was Poland) blew everyone away with their awesome brand of tight & energetic anarchopunk. They sounded totally polish (read : STRACONY, etc), their songs were catchy, powerful, anthemic. Cool show. (Y.B.)
-
FACE UP TO IT demo (selfproduced)
Their previous recordings always lacked a powerful production, but this time around, this "new" demo (recorded back in 2002) rips and is their best recording to date. The music hasn’t changed, it’s still fast paced old style Hardcore with really clever lyrics about consumerism, the DIY scene, GMO’s, environmentalism, etc. Great stuff ! faceuptoit@hotmail.com (Y.B.)
-
1125 "hardcore/ tysiac sto dwadziescia piec" Cd (Pasazer)
I was so glad to see this polish old school Hc masterpiece available on Cd ! This early discography not only includes their wonderful first cassette, but also the split Ep with WITHIN REACH and bonus tracks. Yipee ! Great digipack, over an hour of tight aggressive old school Hc with raucous vocals, recorded back in 1998, I just love this band ! Too bad the lyrics aren’t translated. http://www.pasazer.pl (Y.B.)
-
"GIRLS ATTACK #1" Festival : KINPPA KC + ANTIBODY + HHM + CRIA CUERVOS, Rennes (France), 11/06/2004, @ Jardin moderne (show review)
Geez, this is the first time we organized a show without losing any money. :) About 150 people showed up, which was cool. The weather was nice and the bands & people were really friendly. We had already seen KINPPA KC live once and thought they were ok, but this time they just blew us away. They play really tight & powerful jazz-core along the lines of VICTIMS FAMILY, MANNEQUIN BEACH or NO MEANS NO. I was slightly disappointed by ANTIBODY, who were good but didn’t play their best set. They told me their songs were the same as the ones they played at Le wagon a few weeks ago, yet they sounded much more New York Hc oriented to me. They made me think of Brazil’s NEGATIVE CONTROL. HHM ruled the place with their funny mix of punk-rock and riot grrl stuff. What else can I say. They were good. And CRIA CUERVOS were such a good surprise ! Their early material was good but I always thought they were "too basic" and lacked a little something. This was not the case here as they were excellent, be it music wise or lyric wise. More shows like this one please ! (Y.B.)
-
ANKBILBIM "Coyc" tape (Stauropygial)
Oh Jesus, why do I get sent stuff like this ? I’m sure my friends in Russia love this, though ! :) First, I’m not even sure about the name of the band because everything in the booklet is written in Russian, and my Russian ain’t too fluent, you know ? As far as the music goes this band plays experimental rock. Just like many Russian bands do. It’s well played and the lyrics in Russian make for a funny listen, but I really can’t stand that kind of music. rp@stauropygial.spb.ru (Y.B.)
-
PEGGIO PUNX 2xCD discography (SOA)
Christ, two Cds of 78 minutes each !! What a document. PEGGIO PUNX were one of the precursors of Italian Punk-hardcore. I never enjoyed them much, but they were an interesting band. They had an original punk sound, kinda similar to jazzcore bands like VICTIMS FAMILY or NO MEANS NO mixed with anarchopunk stuff (CRASS/ CONFLICT). Their early studio recordings are great, and I don’t like the latest much. And the live Cd, damn, you gotta be a fan to take 78 minutes in a row… http://www.soarecords.it (Y.B.)
-
COSTA’S CAKE HOUSE "555" cassette
German metal-core band on a Russian label. I like this band ok. They put out two mini Cds and one split Cd before that, and I have no idea if the tracks on this cassette were released on vinyl or Cd. Either ways, COSTA’S CAKE HOUSE play pretty good varied Hardcore with lots of metal thrown in (or maybe it’s metal with some Hc thrown in). The packaging is cool. endishear@yahoo.com (Y.B.)
-
CONTRA LEGEM + CHARLY’S ANGELS + ? + ? + ?, 05/06/2004, Rennes (France), @Mondo bizarro (show review)
This was a show to support that local club called Le mondo bizarro (the name’s taken from a RAMONES’ song of course). The audience as well as most of the bands were into rock’n’roll, psychobilly or garage/ 60’s punk. None of the bands were bad, but CONTRA LEGEM were the only one I really enjoyed. Same as usual : really tight mid-paced old school Hardcore. CHARLY’S ANGEL were quite decent too (female fronted punk-rock’n’roll). (Y.B.)
-
MYRA LEE Cd (Bloko autonoma)
Weird band name, uh ? MYRA LEE deliver 9 tracks of typical but well-played emo ; off beat rhythms, screaming vocals (grrr..), arty artwork, etc. I’m no fan of this style of music, but they do it well, and there are even some great moments. The packaging is ace ! If you’re into DISCHORD bands (everything they put out after 1985) or emo in general, check this out. myralee@free.fr (Y.B.)
-
FAST COP TERROR "the great killing of cops" Cd-r (demo)
13 tracks in 14 minutes ; this ain’t no emo ! Excellent title and pretty decent lo-fi grindcore from Cherbourg, France. I believe this was recorded during a rehearsal, but with a good sound quality this could be a good band. Hey where’s the lyric sheet, lazy fuckers ! xjibex@hotmail.com (Y.B.)
-
URBAN STRIP/ OWN DECISION split cassette
This came out a couple years ago. It was an interesting project ; URBAN STRIP come from Russia and play metallic mosh-core with even a couple NU-metal influences. I’m no big fan, but it’s always interesting to hear bands from far-off places. OWN DECISION recently disbanded, and it is sad because they were a really interesting French band. They were Straight-edge, wrote socially-aware lyrics and played good mosh-core/NyHc. This is a totally decent tape if you dig that kind of music. xarnoxhosoix@hotmail.com (Y.B.)
-
UNHINGED "crime and punishment" Cassette (wss)
Hey, I lost track with UNHINGED after their first demo I think. I thought their later works were more rock, or noisy, but this album rips ! The female vocalist is different than on the first recordings, but she has a great voice, and the music’s tight, powerful punk-Hc with a slight crust sound. Great lyrics too ! diyhc@yahoo.com (Y.B.)
-
THE VICIOUS FIVE "the electric chants of the disenchanted" mCd (Self produced)
This Portuguese band reminds me of REFUSED, ENDSTAND, BURN HOLLYWOOD BURN, you know, rockish emo-Hardcore kind of thing, but they sound a bit more punk-rock than those bands. They also have that semi-intellectual, semi-punk, semi-revolutionist attitude and sing lyrics about burning things down and fucking shit up, but they don’t really go anywhere either… The best thing about his Cd is that the songs are really short, so you don’t get bored listening to them. http://www.thevicious5.com (Y.B.)
-
GUSSET #1 fanzine
I remember I used to read quite a few zines like that in the past, so it’s nice to see there’s still people writing some ; GUSSET is a fanzine written by Hc kids, but that doesn’t deal with music. Instead, you get lots of ramblings, columns & thoughts about life in general, the scene, movies, food not bombs, Henry Thoreau, Bmx, politics, etc. For a first issue, this ain’t too bad ! xihatepornmailx@yahoo.com and brokenxpancreas@yahoo.com (Y.B.)
-
LONG TIME… NO SCENE ! compilation tape (Constipation rds)
Haaa, I love tapes like that ; 20 songs, 10 new Hc-punk bands from Israel recorded in 2003. Ok, the sound quality ain’t great (but it’s not too bad either), but this is a wonderful way to discover an unknown & far-off scene ! My favourites are SOON IN HERE, NIKMAT OLALIM and VAADAT KISHUT. Give this a try ! constipationrcds@yahoo.com (Y.B.)
-
FTX + STRONG AS TEN, Rennes (France), 14/05/2004, @ l’Ekluserie (show review)
Decent turnout although we were expecting better. Few "true" Hardcore kids showed up which was sad.. STRONG AS TEN play tight and powerful old style New York Hc with mosh parts and fast parts. Great stuff ! I think they were a nice surprise to everyone. FTX were great as well, although I believe the sound quality wasn’t as great as for STRONG AS TEN. But they’re good musicians too, and made for a cool band. Would love to see them in a real gig-place. (Y.B.)
-
MASSAKRO Cd (Cryptas)
Damn, CRYPTAS put out so many releases, they must be huge over there. MASSAKRO ain’t the best band they’ve put out ; they play really typical crust/dis-punk. The sound is decent, the music is decent, the lyrics are political, but it’s all been said and done before… cons_internacion@hotmail.com (Y.B.)
