BAM !! [DTG] "wipe my butt" Cd-r (self released)
3 track demo by this band from Lille (northern France). They’re kinda half way between grunge and punk’n’roll. They remind me quite a bit of HOLE, L7, THE DISTILLERS, you know, that kind of stuff. There’s tons of bands in France playing that kind of music, so I’m sure they’ll have many followers soon. http://www.myspace.com/bamdanstagueule (Y.B.)
-
THE RAZORBURNS "ouch !" Cd (Emancypunx)
EMANCYPUNX puts out a lot of different bands. This time it’s melodic punk from Los angeles, not unlike THE GITS, THORAZINE, UXA, BLITZ BABIES or THE RAMONES. They have a rock’n’roll touch and a snotty female singer ; these tunes stick to your head and make for a pleasant listen. The lyrics are, I would say, of a "personal" nature. http://www.emancypunx.com (Y.B.)
-
RUX "punx from hell" Cd (Skunk)
Holy shit, punk from Korea. This country now has a great underground rock scene. I had already heard a couple decent Hardcore bands from over there, but it’s the first time I get to hear a true punk one : they have everything, the spikes, the sound and… well, all the lyrics are written in Korean, which is awesome, but they aren’t translated unforntunately. Musically, they have no reason to be jealous of European bands, nor of the ’82 english punk bands they worship. The production is awesome, and so is the music. They have a great bass player, anthemic choruses, and cover THE CLASH as well as COCK SPARRER. They remind me of DINGO and ONE WAY SYSTEM. http://www.myspace.com/ruckusarmy (Y.B.)
-
CIRCLE "the day Elvis shook his ass" mCd (Genet)
Modern Hardcore from Belgium. Tight and well produced, with a strong REFUSED influence. Some songs are slightly boring, but the most rockin’ ones are great. Personal lyrics. http://www.genetrecords.com (Y.B.)
-
DEROZER "chiusi dentro" Cd (Mad butcher)
Same as before, but maybe not as good. I enjoyed their previous album a bit more, although it’s still tight melodic punky Hardcore, similar to BAD RELIGION but sung in Italian. Maybe a tiny bit more melodic Hc, and a bit less Punk-rock/Oï oriented. Ok stuff. http://www.madbutcher.de (Y.B.)
-
DOGSHIT SANDWICH "1999-2001 ; 3 years of shit" Cd (Weird)
They did a split Cd with NERVOUS TENSION and had this almost anarcho-punk sound, but these early songs sound really different (although they do a CONFLICT cover). I can’t say I like this much ; they have a total Uk-82 punk sound that is really raw and basic, almost Oï at times (they cover the BUSINESS and RUNNIN’ RIOT as well). The first demo tracks are quite bad, while the latest ones, which are much better, still don’t move me much. Drunk punks should like it. http://www.punkshitrecords.stigon.com (Y.B.)
-
RENO DIVORCE "you’re only making it worse" Cd (Boss tuneage)
Their previous album was great, this one is the same. It’s tight American melodic Hardcore, with a few punk, rock and garage influences. Nothing special, but great stuff for fans of LAG WAGON, BAD RELIGION, RHYTHM COLLISION, BOLLWEEVILS, PENNYWISE, SCREECHING WEASEL, etc etc. www.bosstuneage.com (Y.B.)
-
RESTONS SOBRES "fin de siglo" Cd (DDT)
Yummy, more spanish hardcore. RESTONS SOBRES had already released a great demo, and this is their first Cd. It’s not 100% perfect, but it really is great ; they mix tons of different genres while keeping strong punk-Hc roots. Their versatile yet powerful music brings to mind great bands like NOCIVO, maybe even french bands like DESERT CULTUREL or TOXXIC TV. Excellent stuff. http://www.ddtgatazka.com (Y.B.)
-
ANTIMASTER/ GIVE UP ALL HOPE split Cd (Dogma destroyer)
TRAGEDY influenced dis-beat from Mexico, versus DISCHARGE/ EXTREME NOISE TERROR influenced dis-beat from England. It’s all fairly good stuff, but have you noticed how all punk bands wear and sound the same these days ? I think they missed the point. Or maybe it’s me. But someone got it wrong, that’s for sure. http://www.myspace.com/dogmadestroyer (Y.B.)
-
VARUKERS "no masters no slaves" Cd (Estajanovismo)
I believe this best-off compilation came out right before their Mexican tour last year ? I don’t like best-off comps, but this one ain’t bad. The VARUKERS have been around for ages, put out dozens of records, and it’s nice top see they haven’t written a bad song during all their "career" !! It’s all great powerful and typical Uk-82 punk, similar to ONE WAY SYSTEM, GBH, OI POLLOI, maybe even DISCHARGE. But I’d still rather buy the original albums. And the lyrics are too short & sloganistic. http://www.estajanovismo.com (Y.B.)
-
DANCING ON ASHES "Despair anthems" (Exabrupto)
First time I heard it, I thought it sucked, because the production is really shitty ; they have a big, clean production that doesn’t fit this music style at all ! It’s all the more sad as the music is really good ! It’s really trendy Mexican emo-crust punk with a huge dose a metal thrown in. I like it a lot, although it’s not original at all. And these positive song titles make me laugh ! ("sick sad suicide", "da knife", "la ville des morts", "el teatro de los miserables", "sons of mud",…). I love the melancholy and despair that reeks from this music, and all those guitar solos are cool too. http://www.exabruptodistro.com (Y.B.)
-
HOLOKAUST "into the void of oblivion" Cd (Despotic)
This seems to be one new album + several split Ep’s as bonus. Cool. This is American dis-beat (DISCHARGE), with a couple emo-crust influences (TRAGEDY) thrown in. The lyrics are short, very short, much to short, and the music is good, but so unoriginal, and so cliché. It’s sad punk people, who are supposed to stand against the norm, fall into molds like these. http://www.myspace.com/despoticrecords (Y.B.)
-
SIN FRONTERAS NI BANDERAS #3/ WGF split newsletter (in French)
Cd (Ataque sonoro)
Hehe, now I can see why this portuguese band is famous. They have a strong Oï base, but include a lot of other styles to their sound : punk, hardcore, ska, street rock’n’roll… It’s not the best thing I have a heard in my life, but it definitely is good, well produced, stuff. As for the lyrics, I don’ts peak Portuguese so… http://www.myspace.com/mataratos1982 (Y.B.)
-
GAROTOS PODRES "garotozil de podrezepam" Cd (Anti-corpos DIY)
This famous, long-running brazilian band is made of good musicians who aren’t afraid to add various influences to their Oï roots. There’s a bit of ska, rock’n’roll and Hardcore in here. Some songs are truly excellent, while a couple others are more, say, average. Very decent lyrics in Portuguese, too. http://www.geocities.com/garotospodresbr (Y.B.)
-
GOLPE JUSTO "revolucion en la evolucion" Cd (Discos de hoy)
Well, I don’t know. When I heard their first Ep back in 1991, I didn’t like it much. And after that, I grew tired of the whole NyHc (now New York – metal) thing. But this Cd, wow ! It’s excellent ! It compiles their first Ep, cassette, as well as recordings from 2002. They remind me a lot of PRAP’S from Spain, whom I love, as well as other early NyHc bands like VISION OF DISORDER, BACKLASH, etc. This is really strong, powerful, and uptempo NyHc with moshparts and hateful vocals. Good stuff ! (Too bad the booklet is so thin). http://www.discosdehoy.com (Y.B.)
-
NAMES FOR GRAVES "version 2.1" Ep (Refuse)
Ok, this band features ex-members of GOOD CLEAN FUN, IN THE RED and COMMITTED, and it was recorded by Mr Issa (though I don’t find the production to be awesome). This said, well, it’s decent uptempo SxE hardcore, with melodies and decent personal lyrics. It’s not like I’m amazed or anything. REFUSE has put out better records. But it’s not a bad one either... http://www.refuserecords.prv.pl (Y.B.)
-
TANGO UNDERGROUND "polusok" Cd (Self released)
Yep, great stuff from Hungary here. First, the production is good, and they have a quite original sound mixing various influences : they’re an old school Hardcore band, with slight punk-Hardcore and New York Hc flavours thrown in. They remind me quite a lot of early INVAZIJA, but since you’ve probably never heard of INVAZIJA, it doesn’t help much. They also remind me of other Lithuanian/ Polish/ Bulgarian bands, but that’s because of the language. Maybe SICK OF IT ALL then ? Or 1125 ? Ach, I don’t know. Buy that Cd and see for yourself. I was just disappointed there were no lyric translations provided with the Cd. http://www.tangounderground.hu (Y.B.)
-
FINAL CONFLICT "no peace on earth – no rest in hell" Cd (SOS)
Well, this ain’t such a bad surprise. Their first album never moved me much, but their earlier recordings kicked serious ass. This 2006 reunion album sounds pretty much like what they used to play, or like DISCHARGE, or BROKEN BONES, you know, powerful punk-Hc with metal riffs. It’s well-produced and well-played, it’s all ok stuff, although I do believe that after a few years, bands should all be wise enough to throw in the towel. ;) http://sosrecords.us (Y.B.)
-
DYSPNEA/ NAKOT split Ep (We don’t fight it)
Greek bands have always had a particular, dark and crusty sound that I like a lot. I have almost never heard a bad Greek band. This split Ep is no exception. None of these two bands are very original, but they stand above average. DYSPNEA have a more crusty sound with deep guttural vocals. NAKOT play a more traditonal kind of punk-Hc. Nice stuff. http://www.geocities.com/wedontfightit (Y.B.) PS : I just learnt NAKOT actually hail from Serbia ! :)
-
EYE FOR AN EYE "Dystans" Cd (Pasazer)
No, not the old Us post-hardcore band of course. This is a new Polish band. I like them. They have a female singer who make them sound a lot like POST REGIMENT. But as much as POST REGIMENT was a punk-hardcore band, I would say that EYE FOR AN EYE are a hardcore-punk band. See what I mean ? They’re much more hardcore, less melodic than POST REGIMENT. The music actually reminds me a bit of another polish band called 1125. It’s really good stuff, but the band needs to practice a bit more and find their own path in life. http://www.pasazer.pl (Y.B.)
-
I SHOT CYRUS/KRIEGSTANZ split Ep (Ups)
I SHOT CYRUS kick ass, we all know that. And these tracks are really good. Not the best they’ve ever recorded, but still really good. Fast, intense and full of hate. What else could you expect from NEWSPEAK, NO VIOLENCE or POINT OF NO RETURN people ? KRIEGSTANZ, featuring SEEIN RED members, fall a bit pale in comparison, but they’re still pretty good. Only slower, more punk-hardcore oriented, with good pessimistic lyrics. http://www.upsrecords.com (Y.B.)
-
CHAOS ZZZ Ep (Subversive ways)
I saw these guys live and thought they were great. This Ep is good, but they sound more basic, more cliché than what I can remember. It’s typical dis-beat/crust-punk straight outta Scandin… err wait, Saint Etienne, France. www.subversive-ways.org (Y.B.)
-
HAPPY BASTARDS/ KISMET HC split Ep (Fight for your mind)
KISMET HC are a great British punk-Hc band. I believe the tracks on their split Cd-r were better, but these ones are still very good, too. HAPPY BASTARDS are another female fronted punk-Hc band from England. I like them alright, but something is missing. Maybe it’s the vocals. Let’s keep an eye out for them and wait for their next recordings. www.f-f-y-m.org (Y.B.)
-
ARMED RESPONSE UNIT "no point calling the cops, they ain’t coming" Ep (Land seed)
Uk punk-hardcore. Nice stuff. It’s pretty fast, angry, with negative lyrics. Not the best band I’ve heard in my life, but I saw they’re touring France soon, and if they don’t play too far from my house, I’ll go see them. http://www.myspace.com/thearmedresp... (Y.B.)
-
TACHED OUT Ep (Subversive ways)
Ex-members of some famous Us crust-punk bands going for a more punk’n’roll approach (MOTORHEAD anyone ?). This ain’t bad stuff, but I can’t say it moved me much. Nice orange vinyl though. www.subversive-ways.org (Y.B.)
-
ENDROPHOBIA Ep (No options)
German all-star punk band featuring members from RESIST, LOST WORLD and more. It’s good stuff, obviously, both musically and lyrically, although some of the lyrics are slightly naïve. But I enjoyed this alright. http://www.nooptionsrecords.com (Y.B.)
-
INSTED "proud youth" Cd (Indecision)
Man, where do I start ? INSTED changed my life ! I was already SxE when I bought their second Lp, but I started to claim it and X up thanx to them. Their clean haircuts and sportswear gear turned me off at first, but the music was sooo powerful, and the lyrics so cool, that I quickly got fond of them. Actually, it was awesome to read intelligent lyrics that were not as sloganistic as those written by most punk bands at that time. And the music was perfect ; fast, super tight and intense, definitely as good as YOUTH OF TODAY or NO FOR AN ANSWER for instance. I never enjoyed INSTED’s first Lp, which was much more cliché (just as for GORILLA BISCUITS), but it’s still coool to have them both on one single disc, and the awesome thing is you get a whole demo, their great Ep and a couple extra tracks as bonus ! Do not miss this. www.indecisionrecords.com (Y.B.)
-
OPOZICION "ruido insurgente" Ep (Fight for your mind)
Very political punk from Colombia. They would probably have been boring without the saxophone and dual vocals that make them stand from the crowd. It’s all ok stuff. I wish they had included more info in the booklet though. Did I mention how politically motivated they are ? www.f-f-y-m.org (Y.B.)
-
GO ! "reactive" Cd (Go !)
Yep, the band got back together a couple years ago (and split up again a few weeks ago). As you already know I’m always sceptical about reunions, but GO ! is one of my all time favourite bands, so… Well, this Cd ain’t too bad. As many old punks do, they play slower than they did in their youth, and there’s less anger and urgency in the music/lyrics. Some of the lyrics are funny, but a couple of them are pretty hippie/cheesy too. The music, although slower, is still great, I just wish they would play faster from time to time. They included a couple live shows in the end as bonus tracks. Nice. http://www.myspace.com/gonyhc (Y.B.)
-
VOICE OF THE MYSTERONS "They have pulled down deep heaven on their heads" Cd (Boot to head)
Damn, this is crazy stuff, and real hard to classify as well. I could swear the singer is Jello Biafra. It’s incredible how he sounds like him. And the music is actually pretty close to THE DEAD KENNEDYS, too, but much more varied and technical. Kinda like THE DEAD KENNEDYS mixed with VICTIMS FAMILY, and then THE FALSE PROPHETS for instance. It’s crazy. Not the kind of stuff I would listen to all day, but I’ll give them many extra points for just being different. The lyrics are weird in a metaphorical/biblical way. http://www.boottohead.com (Y.B.)
-
MY MINDS MIND "48 reasons to leave this planet" Cd (Self made god)
1 song : great. 5 songs : good. 10 songs : ok. But 48 songs (in 41 minutes !) are too much to take !! Extreme stuff from Holland, half-way between grindcore and thrashcore. Too bad lyrics aren’t provided because the song titles sounded cool. http://www.selfmadegod.com (Y.B.)
-
NET WEIGHT mCd (Fragment)
Their first Cd was only "average", but this one, this one ! Wow, these guys have matured a lot !! Super tight, raging and uptempo old school Hardcore, not the ’88 revival stuff but modern old school. They sound a lot like X-MILK (from Spain as well) or PEQENA ORUGA MECANICA, or SOTTOPRESSIONE from Italy. Awesome digipack to top it all, and introspective/metaphorical lyrics written in Spanish. Great stuff. http://www.fragmentrecords.com (Y.B.)

NO MORE FEAR "a matter of choice" mCd (Goodwill)
Well done italian old school Hardcore that does not move me at all. Try this recipe at home : mix INSTED, GORILLA BISCUITS, BOLD and POINTING FINGER in a blender, then add a huge dose of pathetic clichés. I hope these kids will have more personality when they grow up ! The lyrics are pretty good, but would be better if they were written in their mother tongue. http://www.goodwillrecords.net (Y.B.)
-
MY PRECIOUS/ GAUZE MEANS NOTHING split mCd (Endless nameless)
MY PRECIOUS, from Singapore, play good emo with female vocals, reminiscent of ANALENA. This is really nice stuff, with uninteresting personal lyrics unfortunately. GAUZE MEANS NOTHING wins the award for the worst band that ever existed on this planet. It’s the whiniest band I have ever heard ; they are completely unbearable. Please, bring back the death penalty now. http://www.endlessnamelesscollective.net (Y.B.)
-
FTX/ WOOF split mCd (Come dancing)
Two good "modern old school hardcore" bands. One from Germany and one from France. To be honest I listened to it three times without being able to say which band was which ! It’s good stuff, but I believe both bands’ first records were slightly better. Well, this is typical modern hardcore : uptempo rhythms, melodies, moshparts, …with personal lyrics. http://comedancingrecords.free.fr (Y.B.)
-
CHILDREN OF FALL "ignition for poor hearts" (Scene police)
Dog knows I don’t like emo, but when it’s so intense, it’s more "hardcore" than "emo", right ? The more powerful songs are truly great. Some others are less good, although not boring. Their first album was pretty good, but this one is better, faster, heavier, and better produced. The lyrics are cool. Emo fans should not miss this ! http://www.scenepolice.de (Y.B.)
-
DOSE LETALE/ ATOMIC TANGO split Cd-r (Self released)
This is a totally decent split demo by two new punk bands from Saint-Etienne, France. DOSE LETALE have a punk sound, with a little emo-crust influence thrown in. The sound quality is a tiny bit muffled but they’re pretty good, with dual vocals and political lyrics. I hope they won’t get overcome but that emo-crust thing, though. ATOMIC TANGO, featuring ex-members of C.T.B., also play punk, with a little less guitars and a more punk-rock sound. I think I like them a bit more. They also write political lyrics, some of which I found to be interesting ("female voice", "dusk of the living dead", "my country",…). Two bands to watch out for. atomicxtango@gmail.com (Y.B.)
-
UNDER THE BLACK SAILS Cd-r (Self released)
American melodic hardcore that sounds quite a lot like early NO USE FOR A NAME or early PROPAGANDHI. LAG WAGON, PENNYWISE or NO FX also come to mind. It’s pretty good, although not too original, and I can’t tell you much more because the Cd-r neither came with a lyric sheet nor a booklet. All I can say is these 6 tracks are gonna be released as an Ep soon. http://www.myspace.com/blacksails (Y.B.)
-
NOMATRIX "Ep" mCd (Dead lamb)
This new record is the same as before, maybe a bit slower and more melodic ; it’s still a mix of that classic Uk punk sound with melodic hardcore stuff. There’s some good riffs, but it still lacks something to stand out from the crowd. The lyrics are really good and attack uniformity and group mentality. Keep an eye out for this band. http://www.deadlambrecords.com (Y.B.)
-
THE POISON IVVY "out for a kill" Cd (Crazy love)
Holy shit ! I reviewed this band’s first record in my old zine, almost 15 years ago !! I had no idea they were still around. Whatever music style they may be playing now, people who’ve been into music for a such a long time obviously know how to play their instruments, therefore the music cannot be totally boring. And it actually is pretty good punk’n’roll, with punk-rock, surf, maybe even Oï influences. I wouldn’t listen to that kind of stuff all day long, but if I had to pick a couple punk’n’roll records to go live on an island, this would probably be one of them. Hey, how about a lyric sheet next time ? http://www.poisonivvy.com (Y.B.)
-
TIT PATROL "shut up juice" mCd (Madison underground)
American uptempo pop-punk, along the lines of THE RAMONES and THE QUEERS. They also sound a lot like many of those early LOOKOUT rds bands. The songs are short, which is cool, and overall the music’s pretty good. I just have no idea what the lyrics are about. Girls it seems ? http://www.madisonundergroundpress.com (Y.B.)
-
THE HEADIES "it’s a superman’s world" mCd (Madison underground)
It seems MADISON UNDERGROUND is specializing in pop-punk bands, cos this is another American band that sounds like they could be on LOOKOUT, HONEST DON’S, etc. The sound quality is good, they cover THE RAMONES and ANGRY SAMOANS… but where’s the lyric sheet ?? http://www.madisonundergroundpress.com (Y.B.)
-
MAKING SENSE Cd-r (Kawaii)
This is their 2003 demo, rereased by a French label with 4 bonus tracks. This is great old school SxE Hardcore that sounds a lot like BOLD. They’re from Japan, and as often with Japanese bands, the lyrics don’t make any sense, although they’re trying hard to copy American classics and reproduce all the clichés that go along with the genre. The music’s nice, though. http://www.kawaiirecords.com (Y.B.)
-
MANSIC "the loving father" Cd-r (Infected)
This is an official Cd-R with a colour cover, compiling songs from various records the band put out. MANSIC hail from Sweden and play fairly original punk-rock with a violin. I like it alright. They’re now called HATE IS JUST A FEELING, and still play the same style. http://www.myspace.com/infectedreco... (Y.B.)
-
MADAME GERMEN "discografia" Cd (Exabrupto)
It seems the emo-crust fashion is fading away, which is not a bad thing. I never liked MADAME GERMEN, who were just 68456th generation TRAGEDY, HIS HERO IS GONE, REMAINS OF THE DAY. Did I mention EKKAIA too ? http://www.exabruptodistro.com (Y.B.)
-
J TAFT & THE NEW FAILED SEEKERS "viagra falls" Cd-r (Self released)
This american rock/folk band plays really varied songs. The first ones aren’t bad, and remind me of later FALSE PROPHETS at times. The last ones are less folk influenced, and have a more classic rock sound ; I like them less. No lyric sheet included so I have no idea what they’re about. http://www.myspace.com/jtafthab (Y.B.)
-
DESTROY EVERYTHING "Freedom of speech means talk is cheap" Cd (Tent city)
With a name like this, and judging by those spikey haircuts, I was expecting some thrashy crust/grind or some anthemic street-punk. So I was really surprised to hear their quite melodic sound ! DESTROY EVERYTHING have a fairly typical US punk-Hardcore sound, taking influences from melodic Hc and punk-rock. They’ve been around since the early 90’s, and sound a bit like MAD PARADE, TOXIC REASONS, DIVIDE & CONQUER, DOA, with a little THE CLASH, RANCID or DEAD KENNEDYS thrown in. They write intelligent lyrics, too. http://www.destroyeverything.com (Y.B.)
